Mastercard has released a new report, Proof Wins: The Convergence of Sports, Travel, and Faith, forecasting that Muslim-friendly sports tourism will become a US$21 billion global opportunity by 2030. The findings carry direct implications for airlines, hotel groups, cruise lines, tour operators, and destination marketing organisations seeking to capture a fast-growing segment of faith-conscious travellers.

Currently, just 6% of international Muslim trips incorporate sports events, indicating substantial headroom for growth. Mastercard's analysis suggests that clear communication of faith essentials—such as halal food availability, prayer facilities, and safe logistics—can significantly boost participation and spending. The report stresses that destinations and event organisers must make these elements visible at the booking stage to convert interest into actual attendance.

Digital channels key to conversion

The report highlights the importance of trusted digital channels and social media in reaching the young, digitally connected Muslim demographic. Mastercard executives note that platforms used by airlines like Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines, as well as hotel chains such as Accor and Marriott, can be leveraged to signal faith-friendly amenities. GDS systems including Amadeus and Sabre could also integrate filters for halal dining and prayer spaces, streamlining the booking process for travel agents and corporate travel managers.

Mastercard's research aligns with broader trends in experience-led travel. The company projects that Muslim international arrivals will reach 245 million by 2030, driven by a youthful population seeking authentic, purpose-driven journeys. This demographic shift presents opportunities for cruise lines like MSC Cruises and Carnival Corporation to offer halal-certified menus and onboard prayer rooms, and for tour operators to design packages that combine sporting events with cultural and religious experiences.

Southeast Asia as emerging hub

Southeast Asia is identified as a region with unique potential to become a global hub for Muslim-friendly sports tourism, thanks to its emerging status as a host for major sporting events. Countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia are already investing in faith-friendly infrastructure, as seen in Indonesian demand fuelling Malaysia's medical tourism expansion. The region's established halal ecosystem, combined with growing sports tourism offerings, positions it to attract both regional and international travellers.

Destinations like Dubai, which already caters extensively to Muslim travellers through its tourism board and airlines, could further capitalise by promoting sports events such as the Dubai Marathon or international cricket matches. Similarly, Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 tourism push, including the Red Sea Project and NEOM, could integrate sports tourism with faith-friendly amenities to draw a global Muslim audience.

The report also underscores the need for travel-tech vendors to develop solutions that make faith essentials discoverable. As highlighted in Amadeus and Microsoft's report on agentic AI use cases, artificial intelligence could personalise travel recommendations based on religious preferences, from prayer timings to halal dining options. Mastercard's own 'Phone. Passport. Mastercard.' campaign already targets Southeast Asian travellers, demonstrating the company's commitment to this market.

For travel professionals, the message is clear: the Muslim sports tourism segment is not a niche but a mainstream opportunity requiring deliberate investment in infrastructure, marketing, and technology. Mastercard executives are available to provide further insights into how destinations can enhance their faith-friendly readiness and leverage iconic sports moments to boost attendance.
