Abu Dhabi's Miral, the developer behind Yas Island's entertainment and leisure ecosystem, has announced a community race designed to combine fitness with wildlife conservation. The 'Run for Impact: Saving the Arabian Sand Cat' will take place on 25 October 2026 at Yas Bay Waterfront, with proceeds supporting research into one of the UAE's most elusive endangered species.

The event is organised in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, Al Ain Zoo, EllisDon, and ZUBLIN Construction LLC. It underscores a growing trend among destination developers to integrate social and environmental objectives into visitor-facing programming, a move that resonates with travel professionals seeking meaningful experiences for their clients.

Race details and conservation funding

Participants can choose from 3km, 5km, or 10km routes, with the first wave starting at 6:45 am. The registration fee of AED 50 (approximately USD 13.61) will be channelled directly into conservation initiatives under IMPACT by Miral, the company's strategic platform for social and environmental impact across Abu Dhabi. The platform, launched with the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma'an, focuses on conservation, arts and culture, health and wellbeing, and education and skills development.

Conservation efforts for the Arabian Sand Cat involve advanced techniques, including environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis and AI-enabled data processing. These methods aim to close critical knowledge gaps about the species' population, habitat, and behaviour, providing a scientific foundation for future protection measures.

For travel trade partners, the race offers a new angle for promoting Yas Island as a destination that blends leisure with purpose. Similar initiatives, such as Saudi Arabia and WEF's tourism impact pioneers, highlight the growing importance of sustainability in destination marketing.

Family activities and awards

Beyond the races, Al Ain Zoo will host family-friendly activities, including themed face painting, photo opportunities, and educational trivia challenges. Exclusive merchandise will be available for purchase, with proceeds supporting the cause. The day concludes with an awards ceremony, where winners receive tickets to Yas Island's theme parks, adding a leisure incentive for participants.

The event aligns with broader wellness trends in the travel industry, as seen in recent hotel and cruise initiatives. For instance, JW Marriott Mumbai Juhu's wellness event and Virgin Voyages' status match both cater to travellers seeking active and purposeful experiences.

Miral's move also reflects a wider industry push towards regenerative tourism, where visitor spending directly supports local ecosystems. The Arabian Sand Cat, a small wildcat native to the Arabian Peninsula, faces threats from habitat loss and fragmentation. By funding eDNA and AI research, the race aims to provide data that can inform conservation strategies across the region.

For travel agents and tour operators, the event presents an opportunity to package Yas Island visits with participation in the race, appealing to niche markets such as eco-conscious runners and wildlife enthusiasts. The involvement of major construction firms EllisDon and ZUBLIN highlights the role of private sector partnerships in funding conservation, a model that could be replicated in other destinations.

As the travel industry increasingly prioritises sustainability, events like Run for Impact demonstrate how destination developers can engage communities and visitors alike. The race not only raises funds but also raises awareness, turning a recreational activity into a conservation tool. With the support of Abu Dhabi Sports Council and Al Ain Zoo, the initiative is set to become a flagship example of impact-driven tourism in the Gulf.
