The PGA Tour Champions is set to make its Portuguese debut with the Portugal Invitational, a $3 million tournament scheduled for 31 July to 2 August 2026 at The Els Club Vilamoura in the Algarve. This marks the first individual stroke-play event organized by the PGA Tour in the country, adding a major professional golf fixture to Portugal’s sporting calendar.
Strategic Partnership and Field of Play
The event is the result of a five-year collaboration between PGA Tour Champions, Arrow Global Group, Turismo de Portugal, and Turismo do Algarve. It will feature 78 players, including stars from the PGA Tour Champions, World Golf Hall of Fame inductees, and competitors from the Legends Tour. Positioned between the ISPS Handa Senior Open and the Staysure Senior PGA Championship, the Portugal Invitational enriches the European summer golf schedule and offers a compelling draw for golf tourism.
The Els Club Vilamoura, redesigned by four-time major champion Ernie Els, previously hosted the Portugal Masters on the DP World Tour. “Whenever my team designs a golf course, we always consider its potential to stage professional tournaments,” Els said, emphasizing the course’s readiness for elite competition. The layout is expected to challenge the field while showcasing the Algarve’s coastal landscape.
Tourism and Economic Impact
Miller Brady, President of PGA Tour Champions, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “Our Tour showcases some of the greatest names in golf and we know fans across Portugal and Europe will relish the opportunity to see these players compete on one of the region's premier golf courses.” The event is expected to drive significant inbound travel, particularly from North America and Europe, aligning with Portugal’s strategy to attract high-spending sports tourists.
Carlos Abade, President of Turismo de Portugal, highlighted the tournament’s role in enhancing the country’s international sporting profile. André Gomes, President of Turismo do Algarve, emphasized the region’s commitment to quality and sustainability, aiming to establish the Algarve as a year-round tourism destination. The Algarve has long been a hub for golf tourism, and this event reinforces its appeal to luxury travelers and MICE groups seeking premium experiences.
The Portugal Invitational will be broadcast on GOLF Channel in the United States and reach over 170 countries through PGA Tour Champions’ global partners. For travel professionals, this represents an opportunity to package golf-centric itineraries, leveraging the event’s visibility to attract affluent clients. The tournament’s timing in late summer also complements existing travel patterns to southern Europe.
For hoteliers and tour operators in the Algarve, the event provides a catalyst for extended season bookings. Properties such as the Conrad Algarve and Vila Vita Parc are well-positioned to cater to the expected influx of golf enthusiasts. The partnership with Turismo de Portugal and Turismo do Algarve underscores the destination’s proactive approach to sports tourism, a segment that continues to grow globally.
As the PGA Tour Champions expands its international footprint, the Portugal Invitational serves as a model for how golf can drive destination marketing and economic impact. Travel professionals should monitor this development for potential partnerships and tailored travel packages.
