A new study by South American tour operator Kuoda has ranked private jet journeys as the most exclusive luxury travel experience, based on exclusivity, personalisation, and consumer interest. The research, conducted in June 2026, evaluated a range of high-end offerings, with around-the-world private jet itineraries topping the list.
The study found that a 17-day private jet trip starts at $181,000 and requires bookings six months in advance. This combination of high price and long lead time creates a significant barrier to entry, distinguishing serious buyers from casual dreamers. The experience also generates nearly one million monthly online searches and 1.6 million Instagram hashtags, indicating robust consumer interest.
Following private jet journeys, private yacht charters and island buyouts ranked second and third. A week-long Mediterranean yacht charter costs $49,000 and requires a ten-month booking lead time, offering fully bespoke itineraries. Island buyouts, such as those available in the Maldives, start at $175,000 for a five-night stay and demand nine months' notice, with nearly 400,000 Instagram posts showcasing these experiences. For context, Maldives luxury resorts have been diversifying their guest mix amid shifting demand patterns, further underscoring the appeal of exclusive island experiences.
At the lower end of the exclusivity scale, private vineyard tours require shorter lead times and lower prices, reflecting a more accessible luxury segment. The study assessed each experience using factors such as starting price, booking lead time, and degree of personalisation, which serve as proxies for exclusivity.
Behind-the-Scenes Complexity Drives Premium Pricing
A luxury travel designer from Kuoda commented: "Pulling off a private jet journey or a polar expedition takes hundreds of hours of behind-the-scenes work for every single day the guest spends travelling." This statement underscores the operational complexity and cost involved in delivering seamless luxury experiences, from coordinating aircraft availability to arranging bespoke ground logistics.
The findings align with broader trends in the luxury travel sector, where demand for unique and personalised experiences continues to rise. Cruise lines such as Explora Journeys have also responded by launching off-peak Mediterranean itineraries, as seen in their recent President’s Cruise announcement, catering to travellers seeking exclusivity beyond peak seasons.
For hoteliers and resort operators, the study highlights the importance of creating high-barrier experiences that justify premium pricing. In the Maldives, for instance, Milaidhoo Maldives CEO emphasises a staff-as-family culture as a key driver of ultra-luxury success, while boutique resorts are joining global loyalty programs to attract discerning travellers seeking intimacy.
The study also noted that private jet journeys are not just about transportation but about the entire curated experience, including accommodation, dining, and activities. This holistic approach is increasingly expected by high-net-worth individuals, who value time savings and seamless logistics over cost considerations.
As consumer interest in exclusive travel continues to grow, the luxury sector is poised for further innovation. Travel agents and tour operators should note the importance of long lead times and bespoke planning in catering to this segment, as well as the potential for cross-selling between private jet charters, yacht rentals, and island buyouts.
