Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Tourism has unveiled an ambitious artificial intelligence strategy that places AI at the core of the Kingdom's rapidly expanding visitor economy. The AI Tourism Vision, announced during the Year of AI 2026, introduces TourismX—a new platform designed to embed intelligence across planning, operations, and service delivery for travel businesses.
The initiative targets every stage of the tourism journey, from holiday planning and hotel interior design to tour guide support and investment decisions. It builds on Saudi Arabia's earlier digitalisation efforts—such as Smart Inspector and Smart Check-In—and signals a shift toward predictive, personalised experiences. The strategy aligns with the Riyadh Declaration on the Future of Tourism, adopted during the 26th UN Tourism General Assembly, which called for greater use of emerging technologies.
TourismX: A Digital Backbone for the Industry
At the heart of the strategy is TourismX, an AI-powered platform launching in beta. The Ministry describes it as the future digital infrastructure for Saudi Arabia's tourism sector. Its initial capabilities include AI-assisted hotel interior design, automated menu creation, branding support, standard operating procedure generation, digital tour guide assistance, and AI-generated tour scripts.
Rather than focusing solely on visitor-facing technology, TourismX aims to embed AI throughout the tourism value chain. Hospitality businesses, tour operators, restaurants, and entrepreneurs—regardless of size—can adopt these tools to improve efficiency and reduce operational costs. The platform is designed to be a one-stop resource for the industry.
Alongside TourismX, the Ministry introduced the beta version of the Saudi MT App, a single AI-enabled platform for investors, tour guides, and tourism operators. The app is powered by Noura, an AI assistant that simplifies access to ministry services and answers queries. To encourage wider innovation, the Ministry also launched the MT Developer Portal, giving technology companies and developers access to APIs and digital integration tools. This move signals a shift from government-led digitalisation to an open innovation model that encourages private-sector technology development.
For travel professionals, the implications are significant. Hoteliers can use AI to design interiors and generate menus, while tour operators can create customised scripts and itineraries. The platform's focus on efficiency and cost reduction could help smaller players compete with larger chains. The developer portal also opens opportunities for travel-tech vendors to build new applications on top of Saudi Arabia's tourism infrastructure.
Minister Al-Khateeb: AI as Transformative as Infrastructure
Commenting on the launch, Saudi Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al-Khateeb said artificial intelligence is becoming as transformative as physical infrastructure once was. “Just as infrastructure reshaped economies over past decades, artificial intelligence is now reshaping how we discover destinations, design experiences, and manage tourism services,” he said. He added that Saudi Arabia's ambition is not simply to adopt AI but to become the global benchmark for smart tourism, using technology to improve visitor experiences while supporting tourism businesses and investors.
The strategy comes as Saudi Arabia continues to rapidly expand its tourism sector under Vision 2030, combining large-scale infrastructure investment with digital innovation. The Kingdom is competing with leading global destinations by leveraging AI to enhance visitor experiences and streamline operations. The launch during the Year of AI 2026 reinforces the government's commitment to positioning AI as a key driver of economic diversification and public-sector innovation.
For travel professionals, the AI Tourism Vision represents a concrete opportunity to engage with a market that is investing heavily in technology. Hoteliers, tour operators, and travel-tech vendors should monitor the beta launch of TourismX and the MT Developer Portal, as they could shape the future of tourism operations in the region. The initiative also aligns with broader trends in the industry, such as the growing importance of personalisation and predictive analytics in travel.
As Saudi Arabia moves from digital tourism to intelligent tourism, the AI Tourism Vision could serve as a model for other destinations looking to integrate AI into their tourism strategies. The Kingdom's focus on open innovation and private-sector collaboration may accelerate the development of new travel technologies, benefiting the global industry.
