Formula 1 is set to return to Malaysia's Sepang International Circuit from 2–4 October 2026, marking the venue's first Grand Prix in nine years. The race, relocated from Bahrain, will anchor a packed tourism calendar as the country rolls out Visit Malaysia Year 2026–2027.

Sepang, located 45km south of Kuala Lumpur, last hosted the Malaysian Grand Prix in 2017. Its 5.543km layout, known for sweeping corners and tropical heat, has long been a favourite among drivers and fans. The return of F1 is expected to draw significant international crowds, particularly from the UK, where Malaysia remains a key long-haul destination.

Tourism Malaysia London Director Sulaiman Suip said: “The return of Formula 1 adds another exciting dimension to what is already set to be an extraordinary year for Malaysia.” The race is part of a broader programme of events and experiences planned for Visit Malaysia Year, which also includes culinary trails and business events initiatives.

Beyond the circuit: destination appeal

For travel professionals, the race offers a hook to sell extended itineraries. Beyond Sepang, clients can combine the Grand Prix with Kuala Lumpur's cultural landmarks, Penang's UNESCO-listed George Town, or the beaches of Langkawi and the hill stations of the Cameron Highlands. Eco-tourism options near the circuit include Bagan Lalang Beach and the Sepang Gold Coast, as well as mangrove tours.

Access is improving. Malaysia Airlines continues to operate direct flights from London Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur, and Gulf Air has launched a new nonstop service from Bahrain to the Malaysian capital, easing connections for Gulf-based fans and business travellers. The race itself will be ticketed via bahraingp.com, with packages expected to be offered by regional tour operators.

The event also complements Malaysia's broader push into business events. The Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) recently marked nine years as the country's global MICE hub, and the F1 weekend could serve as a corporate hospitality draw. For agents, the race provides a fresh reason to revisit Malaysia, especially as rising Singapore MICE costs push organisers to consider alternatives like Kuala Lumpur.

Hospitality players are also expanding. Frasers Hospitality recently debuted in Malaysia with a serviced residence in Putrajaya, adding to the country's accommodation mix for event-driven travel. Meanwhile, Malaysia Airlines has been boosting its brand with initiatives like a cycling challenge featuring an Olympic champion, keeping the carrier in the spotlight ahead of Visit Malaysia Year.

The F1 announcement is a timely boost for the tourism sector, which has been rebuilding after the pandemic. With the race falling in early October, it extends the peak season and gives operators a chance to sell shoulder-period travel. The combination of a world-class circuit, improved air links, and a packed national events calendar makes Malaysia a compelling proposition for 2026.

For UK agents, the direct London–Kuala Lumpur route simplifies logistics, while the Gulf Air connection opens up the Gulf source market. As the event date approaches, expect more details on hospitality packages, circuit-side experiences, and combined tour offerings. The return of F1 to Sepang is not just a sporting milestone—it is a strategic tourism play that could reshape Malaysia's inbound numbers for years to come.
