Thailand is doubling down on its relationship with western China, with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul leading a high-level delegation to Shanghai, Chengdu, and Beijing from 16 to 20 July 2026. The mission is designed to deepen tourism collaboration, improve air connectivity, and upgrade infrastructure to capture a larger share of China's outbound travel market.

At the Thailand–China Sichuan Investment and Economic Forum 2026, the Prime Minister addressed more than 200 business leaders from western China. The Thai delegation included Deputy Prime Ministers Ekniti Nitithanprapas and Sihasak Phuangketkeow, along with Minister of Industry Varawut Silpa-archa. They were welcomed by Sichuan's Governor Shi Xiaolin and other provincial officials.

Air Connectivity: Restoring and Expanding Routes

A central pillar of the visit is the strategic cooperation with Sichuan Airlines to restore and expand air routes. The airline is expected to resume the Chengdu–Chiang Mai service, a key link for travelers from western China. Additionally, discussions are underway to launch new routes to Hua Hin and U-Tapao airports, which would open up Thailand's eastern seaboard and southern resort areas to a broader Chinese audience.

This push aligns with the policy of Surasak Phancharoenworakul, Minister of Tourism and Sports, to enhance tourism infrastructure and air connectivity. The initiatives are expected to support Thailand's tourism sector in the latter half of 2026 and into 2027, targeting over 5.13 million Chinese visitors and generating at least $7.9 billion (288.385 billion Baht) in revenue.

Digital Partnership with Meituan

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is also exploring a partnership with Meituan, a leading Chinese digital platform. This collaboration involves data exchange for market analysis and initiatives like the Thailand National Campaign and the Trusted Thailand programme to boost Chinese traveller confidence. By leveraging Meituan's vast user base and data capabilities, TAT aims to tailor marketing efforts and improve the travel experience for Chinese tourists.

These efforts come as China's outbound travel market continues to rebound. According to recent data, China set a new record with 369 million border crossings in the first half of 2026, underscoring the immense potential for destinations like Thailand. Broader Implications for Thailand's Tourism Sector

Thailand's renewed focus on western China is part of a broader strategy to diversify its source markets and reduce reliance on traditional hubs like Bangkok and Phuket. By improving connectivity to secondary airports such as Hua Hin and U-Tapao, the country aims to distribute tourist flows more evenly and promote lesser-known destinations.

The push also complements other recent initiatives, such as the TAT and UOB Thailand Launch Domestic Travel Campaign with Cashback and Rewards, which aims to stimulate domestic travel. However, the international focus remains critical, especially given the challenges faced by China's aviation sector. China's Big Three Airlines Post $1.48B Q2 Loss as Fuel Costs Soar, highlighting the need for cost-effective route planning and partnerships.

For travel professionals, this development signals a clear opportunity. Airlines should consider expanding codeshare agreements with Sichuan Airlines and other Chinese carriers. Hoteliers in Chiang Mai, Hua Hin, and the Eastern Seaboard should prepare for increased Chinese demand. Tour operators and agents can leverage the Trusted Thailand programme to build confidence among Chinese clients.

Thailand's proactive approach, combining high-level diplomacy with practical infrastructure and digital partnerships, sets a benchmark for destination marketing in the post-pandemic era. The coming months will reveal whether these efforts translate into the targeted visitor numbers and revenue.
