Thailand has locked in more than $4.1 billion in investment pledges for its electric vehicle (EV) supply chain, cementing its position as Southeast Asia's dominant automotive manufacturing base. The Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) confirmed that the capital commitments cover 198 projects, spanning battery electric vehicles (BEVs), hybrid systems, battery production, critical components, and charging infrastructure.

The investment wave reflects a broader strategic pivot by global automakers to diversify supply chains and establish regional hubs in Southeast Asia. Unlike some neighboring markets, Thailand's policy framework supports a transition across all major propulsion technologies, including Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), and BEVs. "We must choose to be builders, not just consumers," said Narit Therdsteerasukdi, Secretary General of the BOI, speaking at the International Electric Vehicle Technology Conference in Bangkok.

Electrified Vehicles Surpass 40% of New Registrations

In 2025, electrified vehicles accounted for over 40% of all new vehicle registrations in Thailand, with HEVs leading at 21.8%, closely followed by BEVs at 19.6%. The $4.1 billion investment pipeline is highly distributed, showing deep integration across the supply chain. Notably, BEVs received $1.18 billion across 18 projects, establishing an annual domestic production capacity of more than 370,000 units.

Major global automakers, including Mercedes-Benz, BYD, and Hyundai, have localized production in Thailand, creating over 16,000 local jobs. The BOI has facilitated joint ventures and matchmaking through 18 Sourcing Day events, pairing Thai parts manufacturers with multinational automakers, generating over $1.79 billion in domestic procurement value. "Our goal is to ensure that local industry and workforce are the ones driving this next chapter of growth," Therdsteerasukdi added.

For travel industry professionals, this investment surge has direct implications. The expansion of EV manufacturing and charging infrastructure supports Thailand's broader tourism goals, including the development of sustainable transport options for visitors. As the country positions itself as a hub for green mobility, hoteliers and tour operators can expect improved connectivity and lower-emission ground transport options. The BOI's focus on local supply chains also strengthens the economic ecosystem that supports hospitality and tourism services.

Thailand's tourism sector has been evolving with an emphasis on sustainability and long-term stewardship, as highlighted in recent discussions by industry leaders. The country's commitment to EV infrastructure aligns with global trends toward eco-friendly travel, potentially attracting more environmentally conscious travelers. For airlines and cruise lines operating in the region, Thailand's investments signal a stable and forward-looking business environment.

The BOI's proactive approach to facilitating joint ventures and sourcing events has created a robust network of local suppliers, which can benefit travel-tech vendors and MICE organizers looking for reliable partners. As Thailand continues to attract major automotive investments, the ripple effects on the travel industry are likely to be significant, from enhanced ground transportation to new business opportunities in sustainable tourism.
