Sue Badyari, CEO of World Expeditions Travel Group, has been inducted into the Council of Australian Tour Operators (CATO) Hall of Fame, a recognition of her more than three decades of leadership in the adventure travel sector. The award was presented at the CATO Members Dinner and Hall of Fame Awards in Sydney on 25 June.

A Career of Transformation

Badyari joined World Expeditions in 1986 and took the helm as CEO in 1999. Under her direction, the company evolved from a single-brand Australian adventure travel operator into a global enterprise encompassing 17 specialist travel brands. The group now maintains offices in London, Sydney, New Zealand, and Canada, serving clients across multiple continents.

Her tenure has been marked by a series of industry-first initiatives. World Expeditions introduced comprehensive porter, child, and animal welfare policies, established carbon offsetting programs, and developed community-based tourism projects. These efforts have set benchmarks for responsible travel practices among tour operators worldwide.

Among the company's notable achievements under Badyari's leadership is the first commercial operation of the 1,700-kilometre Nepal traverse of the Great Himalaya Trail. The group also developed eco-comfort camps along the Larapinta Trail in Australia, blending sustainable infrastructure with immersive wilderness experiences.

"I am incredibly honoured and humbled to receive this recognition," Badyari said upon accepting the award. "Adventure travel has changed enormously since I joined World Expeditions in 1986, but the values that underpin it have not."

Beyond her corporate role, Badyari has been a vocal advocate for responsible tourism and sustainable business practices. She has also championed opportunities for women in leadership positions within the travel industry, contributing to broader efforts to diversify the sector's executive ranks.

The CATO Hall of Fame induction underscores Badyari's lasting impact on the adventure travel landscape. Her work has not only expanded World Expeditions' global footprint but also elevated the standards for ethical and sustainable tour operations. As the industry continues to evolve, her legacy serves as a reference point for operators seeking to balance commercial growth with environmental and social responsibility.

For travel professionals, Badyari's recognition highlights the growing importance of sustainability and community engagement in adventure travel. Operators looking to follow her lead can draw lessons from World Expeditions' integrated approach to welfare, carbon management, and local partnerships. The company's success demonstrates that responsible practices can coexist with commercial expansion, a message increasingly relevant as travelers demand more ethical options.

Related coverage on Travelmao includes Ponant's Arctic 2028 bookings and Quark Expeditions' earliest polar season, both reflecting the growing demand for expedition travel. Additionally, Aurora Expeditions' inclusion of Dr. Richard Harris and Coral Expeditions' Kimberley photography voyages illustrate the sector's focus on unique experiences and expert-led programming.
