ABTA, the UK's leading trade association for travel agents and tour operators, is rolling out a new educational initiative to help travel businesses navigate the complexities of hiring apprentices. Starting next month, the association will host a series of webinars and drop-in sessions in partnership with AS Training, a specialist apprenticeship provider. The programme runs for 12 months and is designed to equip employers with the knowledge and tools to bring new talent into their organisations.
First session set for 15 September
The opening webinar, scheduled for 15 September, will cover the fundamentals of apprenticeships, including available funding streams and the broader business benefits. Leading the sessions will be Vicki Wolf, ABTA's Head of Education and Career Development, and Michelle van Sprang, Managing Director of AS Training. Both bring extensive experience in workforce development and will address recent changes to apprenticeship funding, notably the new £2,000 hiring incentive for employers recruiting apprentices under the age of 25, which is set to launch in October.
Attendees will also hear first-hand testimonials from an apprentice and an employer who have successfully integrated apprenticeships into their operations. These case studies aim to provide practical insights into how apprenticeships can be structured to meet business needs while offering meaningful career pathways.
Wolf emphasised the strategic value of apprenticeships, stating: “Taking on an apprentice is a fantastic way to introduce new talent into your business with the added benefit of being able to access Government funding.” Van Sprang echoed this sentiment, adding: “Apprenticeships are one of the most effective ways to develop talented people whilst strengthening a business for the future.”
The session will conclude with a live Q&A, giving attendees the chance to seek tailored advice on their specific circumstances. Registration is open via ABTA's website, and the sessions are free for members.
This initiative comes at a time when the travel industry is increasingly focused on skills development and succession planning. With many businesses facing recruitment challenges, apprenticeships offer a viable route to build a skilled workforce from within. The partnership with AS Training, which has a track record of delivering apprenticeship programmes across various sectors, adds a layer of expertise that ABTA members can leverage.
For travel professionals looking to stay ahead of workforce trends, this series is a timely resource. It also aligns with broader industry efforts to professionalise the sector, as seen in recent moves by other organisations to enhance training and development. For instance, cyber security training for hotel staff has become a priority in some markets, highlighting the growing importance of specialised skills.
ABTA's commitment to education and career development is well established, and this webinar series reinforces its role as a hub for professional growth. By providing clear guidance on funding and best practices, the association is helping its members make informed decisions about their talent pipelines.
As the travel industry continues to evolve, the ability to attract and retain skilled staff will be a key differentiator. This initiative is a practical step towards that goal, and the inclusion of a live Q&A ensures that participants leave with actionable insights.
