Air Charter Service (ACS), the global aircraft charter specialist, has completed a complex heavy-lift operation, moving 163 tonnes of power plant machinery from India to Ghana. The cargo, destined for a power facility in Kumasi, was flown from Ahmedabad to Accra aboard two Boeing 747 freighters, a feat that required meticulous planning and rapid adaptation.

The shipment comprised more than 110 pieces of equipment, with individual items weighing up to 12.5 tonnes and exceeding 10 metres in length. Such dimensions demanded specialised handling, including the use of a nose-loading B747 for the largest components and a second B747 for the remainder of the consignment.

Shahvez Jafary, Chief Commercial Officer of ACS’s Indian operations, highlighted the efficiency gains achieved. "We managed to use only two aeroplanes instead of the initially planned three, meaning a significant saving for our customer," he said. The client, based in Mumbai, had required urgent transportation to boost the plant's operational efficiency, and ACS’s solution delivered both speed and cost-effectiveness.

Overcoming last-minute hurdles

The operation was not without its challenges. Late changes to the packing list threatened to disrupt the schedule, but the ACS team, working in close coordination with the operator’s loadmaster and the client, swiftly adjusted the loading plan. Two external cranes were deployed to lift the heaviest items onto the freighter, while smaller components were palletised for efficient use of space.

Upon arrival in Accra, the machinery was offloaded and transported by lorry to Kumasi, ensuring the power project could proceed without delay. This seamless ground handling underscores the importance of reliable logistics partners in supporting critical infrastructure development across West Africa.

The successful execution of this charter reflects a broader trend in the air cargo sector, where demand for outsized and time-sensitive shipments continues to grow. Airlines and charter brokers are increasingly called upon to deliver solutions that go beyond standard freight, often for energy, mining, and construction projects in emerging markets.

For travel and logistics professionals, the operation serves as a reminder of the value of specialised air charter services. As seen in recent developments such as KlasJet's FAA approval for US charter flights, the charter market is expanding its capabilities to meet diverse client needs.

ACS’s ability to consolidate cargo and reduce aircraft utilisation is a key selling point for cost-conscious shippers. By optimising payload and routing, the company not only saved the client money but also reduced the carbon footprint of the move—an increasingly important consideration in corporate logistics strategies.

The Ghana operation also highlights the growing role of air freight in supporting energy infrastructure. With power plants and renewable energy projects proliferating across Africa, the demand for heavy machinery transport is set to rise. Charter specialists like ACS are well positioned to capitalise on this trend, offering flexibility that scheduled carriers cannot match.

As the global economy becomes more interconnected, the ability to move oversized cargo quickly and reliably will remain a competitive advantage. ACS’s successful delivery to Kumasi is a testament to the expertise and adaptability that define the air charter industry.
