South Korean travelers are finalizing their Chuseok holiday plans, and new data from Agoda reveals a sharp uptick in accommodation searches. The digital travel platform recorded a 38% increase in international searches and a 160% surge in domestic interest compared to two weeks prior, signaling strong pent-up demand for the extended holiday period.

Japan and Vietnam lead international demand

Japanese cities dominate the outbound list, with Fukuoka, Tokyo, and Osaka emerging as the top three international destinations. Fukuoka's appeal is bolstered by its proximity to South Korea—a flight time of just 1.5 hours from Seoul—making it an ideal short-haul escape. Eastar Jet is expanding its services on the Incheon-Fukuoka and Busan-Fukuoka routes, adding capacity to meet holiday demand.

Vietnamese cities Da Nang and Nha Trang also rank among the most-searched international destinations, reflecting sustained interest in Southeast Asia's beach and cultural offerings. The mix of Japanese urban hubs and Vietnamese coastal resorts underscores a preference for nearby, value-driven getaways during the holiday.

Domestic travel heats up, with Sokcho a standout

Domestically, Jeju Island leads the list of most-searched destinations, followed by Busan, Seoul, Sokcho, and Gyeongju. Sokcho, in particular, saw a 324% increase in interest, driven by its diverse attractions—from Seoraksan National Park to coastal seafood markets. This surge highlights a growing appetite for secondary destinations beyond the usual metropolitan hotspots.

Alex Park, Country Director for South Korea at Agoda, commented: "As the Chuseok holiday approaches, South Korean travelers are showing strong interest in nearby destinations, with domestic travel seeing particularly strong demand." Park added that Agoda continues to support travelers with competitive deals on flights, accommodation, and activities, offering a seamless booking experience across its extensive network.

The data aligns with broader trends in Asian travel. Agoda's recent analysis of skip-gen travel highlighted multi-generational trips, while the platform's summer search data showed Thailand topping European searches. For Chuseok, the focus remains firmly on short-haul and domestic options, a pattern consistent with holiday travel behavior in the region.

To capitalize on the surge, Agoda is running its August Mega Sale, offering up to 60% off hotel bookings. The promotion encourages travelers to explore both local and international destinations, with the platform's extensive inventory covering flights, stays, and activities.

For travel industry stakeholders, the data offers actionable insights. Airlines and hoteliers should consider bolstering capacity on popular routes like Incheon-Fukuoka and Seoul-Jeju, while destination marketers in secondary cities like Sokcho could leverage the growing interest. Agoda's role as a booking platform continues to evolve, with recent initiatives like the StayMiles partnership with China Airlines and the revamped partner portal with AI tools enhancing its ecosystem.

As Chuseok approaches, the travel trade should monitor these search trends closely. The strong domestic surge, in particular, suggests that South Korean travelers are prioritizing convenience and value, a preference that could shape booking patterns well beyond the holiday period.
