Air Astana is set to expand its long-haul network with the launch of direct flights between Almaty and Tokyo Narita, starting 30 November 2026. The carrier will operate the route twice weekly, using its Airbus A321LR fleet configured in a two-class layout with Business and Economy cabins.
The outbound service departs Almaty on Mondays and Thursdays at 21:55, arriving in Tokyo at 09:25 the following day. Return flights leave Tokyo Narita on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10:55, touching down in Almaty at 16:20. This schedule is designed to offer convenient connections for both business and leisure travellers, with overnight flights from Kazakhstan and daytime returns.
According to Air Astana CEO Ibrahim Canliel, the route is a strategic milestone for the group. “The launch of direct air services to Japan is a key priority and supports our ambition to strengthen Kazakhstan’s leadership as the hub of Central Asia and Caucasus,” he said. The new service is expected to significantly enhance trade, economic, and cultural ties between the two nations.
Codeshare with Japan Airlines
The Almaty–Tokyo flights will be operated in codeshare with Japan Airlines, deepening the existing partnership between the two carriers. This collaboration will allow passengers to book seamless itineraries on both airlines, opening up connections beyond Tokyo to domestic Japanese destinations and onward Asian points.
Air Astana has been steadily expanding its Asian network, and this route marks its 22nd new addition in 2026. The carrier recently announced plans to link Astana and Bangkok with A321LR nonstops, further cementing its position as a leading airline in the region.
Return fares for the new route start at $797 (US$797) for Economy Class and $3,177 (US$3,177) for Business Class, inclusive of all taxes and charges. Tickets are available through Air Astana's website, mobile app, and accredited travel agents.
Visa and tourism impact
Japanese citizens can enjoy visa-free travel to Kazakhstan for up to 30 days, while Kazakh citizens will require a visa to enter Japan. The visa-free regime for Japanese nationals is expected to stimulate inbound tourism from Japan, a key source market for Kazakhstan's growing travel industry.
The new route also aligns with Kazakhstan's broader tourism strategy, which aims to attract more visitors from East Asia. Tokyo is a major global business and tourism hub, and the direct link is likely to appeal to corporate travellers, tour operators, and independent tourists alike.
For travel agents and tour operators, the Almaty–Tokyo service offers new packaging opportunities, combining Kazakhstan's natural attractions with Japan's urban and cultural experiences. The twice-weekly frequency provides flexibility for both short getaways and longer itineraries.
Air Astana's expansion into Japan follows a series of strategic moves across Asia, including the recent launch of flights to Bangkok. The airline continues to invest in its fleet and network, positioning itself as a key player in the Central Asian and Caucasus aviation market.
With the addition of Tokyo, Air Astana now serves a diverse range of destinations across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The airline's commitment to service quality and operational reliability has earned it recognition from industry bodies and passengers alike.
Travel industry stakeholders, including GDS operators and online travel agencies, will be able to access the new schedules through standard distribution channels. Air Astana's partnership with Japan Airlines also ensures that the route is fully integrated into the broader alliance and codeshare network, providing seamless connectivity for passengers worldwide.
