Air India continues its fleet modernization push with the arrival of its third line-fit Boeing 787-9, registered VT-AWC. The aircraft completed a non-stop delivery flight from Boeing's Charleston facility to Delhi on 4 July 2026, covering the distance in 17 hours and 14 minutes.

Three-Class Cabin and Next-Generation IFE

The new 787-9 is configured in a three-class layout: 30 Business Class suites, 28 Premium Economy seats, and 238 Economy seats. The cabin is equipped with Thales' AVANT Up inflight entertainment system, which provides a more intuitive interface and higher-resolution screens for long-haul passengers.

This delivery is part of Air India's broader strategy to replace older widebody aircraft and standardize its long-haul product. The airline has been progressively inducting new Boeing 787-9s and 777-9s (on order) to improve operational efficiency and passenger comfort on routes to North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.

Air India's fleet renewal is critical as it competes with Gulf carriers and other full-service airlines on long-haul sectors. The new 787-9s offer better fuel efficiency and lower seat-mile costs, allowing the airline to price more aggressively while maintaining service quality.

The airline has also been investing in cabin retrofits for its existing widebody fleet, but the line-fit 787-9s represent the clean-slate product. The Premium Economy cabin, in particular, is a growing segment on long-haul routes, appealing to both corporate travelers and leisure passengers seeking more space without the full Business Class fare.

Air India's network expansion has been notable in recent months. The airline launched its Easy Connect hub-and-spoke service from Varanasi, and has been adding frequencies to key destinations. The new 787-9s are expected to be deployed on high-demand routes such as Delhi–London, Delhi–New York, and Mumbai–San Francisco.

Industry observers note that Air India's fleet modernization is essential for maintaining competitiveness against rivals like Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Singapore Airlines. The airline's order book includes 20 Boeing 787-9s and 10 Boeing 777-9s, with options for additional aircraft.

The arrival of VT-AWC also underscores Boeing's recovery in widebody production, as the Charleston facility ramps up 787 deliveries after earlier quality issues. Air India is one of several carriers taking delivery of new 787s in 2026, alongside United Airlines, American Airlines, and Japan Airlines.

For travel agents and corporate buyers, the new aircraft means more consistent product quality across Air India's long-haul network. The Premium Economy cabin, in particular, offers a compelling option for business travelers on a budget or leisure passengers willing to pay a premium for extra legroom.

Air India's parent company, Tata Sons, has been investing heavily in the airline's turnaround, including fleet renewal, network expansion, and service improvements. The airline reported a narrower operating loss in the last fiscal year and is targeting profitability by 2027.

The delivery of VT-AWC is a tangible sign of that progress. As the airline continues to induct new aircraft, it will be better positioned to compete for premium traffic and grow its share of the long-haul market.
