British Airways is broadening its winter 2026 schedule with two new long-haul routes and a series of capacity increases aimed at leisure and business travelers. The carrier began flying from London Gatwick to Colombo on 23 October, operating three times weekly, and will start Heathrow-Melbourne services on 9 January, timed to coincide with the Australian Open and the Melbourne Grand Prix.
The Colombo route gives UK travelers a direct link to Sri Lanka's beaches, wildlife reserves, and cultural heritage sites, while the Melbourne service opens up Victoria's arts scene and the Great Ocean Road. Both routes reflect the airline's strategy to diversify its winter portfolio beyond traditional sun-and-ski destinations.
Capacity boosts and seasonal additions
Alongside the new routes, British Airways is adding frequencies to Cape Town, Tokyo, and Bridgetown, responding to sustained demand for long-haul winter sun and city breaks. In Europe, the airline is increasing services to Rome, Florence, and Jersey, and will operate seasonal flights to Christmas market hubs including Cologne, Nuremberg, and Innsbruck.
βThe launch of our new Colombo service marks an exciting start to our winter schedule and reflects our continued commitment to offer customers more choice across our network,β said Neil Chernoff, British Airways' Chief Planning and Strategy Officer.
The expanded network gives travel agents and tour operators more options for winter holidays, city breaks, and festive getaways. For corporate travel managers, the Melbourne timing aligns with major business events in Australia's financial capital.
British Airways' move comes as other carriers adjust their winter networks. Air Astana's winter expansion includes Tokyo, Salalah, and Langkawi, while Vietjet is adding Colombo to its South Asia network. The competitive landscape in the Indian Ocean and Asia-Pacific corridors is intensifying.
The new Colombo service also complements British Airways' existing codeshare partnership with Viva, which opens 13 Mexican cities to UK travelers, further expanding the airline's winter reach.
For the travel trade, the winter schedule offers a mix of established favorites and fresh options. The Melbourne route, in particular, is expected to appeal to premium leisure travelers and those attending the Australian Open, while Colombo provides a value-oriented alternative to Maldives and Mauritius.
British Airways' winter program underscores the airline's focus on network optimization, balancing high-demand trunk routes with seasonal leisure niches. The addition of festive market flights to Cologne, Nuremberg, and Innsbruck is a nod to the growing popularity of European Christmas markets among UK travelers.
With the winter schedule now on sale, agents can start packaging these new services. The airline's investment in capacity to Cape Town and Tokyo also signals confidence in long-haul recovery, even as fuel costs and geopolitical uncertainties remain.
As the winter season unfolds, British Airways will be watching load factors on the Colombo and Melbourne routes closely. If successful, these could become year-round or expanded services in future schedules.
