Cosgrove Leisure Parks UK has completed the acquisition of Stonham Barns Park in Stonham Aspal, Suffolk, a move that strengthens the company's footprint in the South-East and London leisure market. The deal, finalised on 9 July, brings under Cosgrove's management a destination known for its diverse retail spaces, recreational offerings, and the Mid-Suffolk Showground, which hosts around 30 events annually.

Strategic Expansion and Planned Upgrades

Managing Director Patrick Cosgrove confirmed the company's intent to introduce fresh ideas and improvements across the park. Planned enhancements include modernising accommodation, expanding activity programmes, and upgrading the retail experience. The acquisition aligns with Cosgrove's broader strategy to grow its portfolio of parks, which already includes several properties across the region.

“We are delighted to confirm that, as new owners of Stonham Barns Park, we are looking to introduce fresh ideas and improvements,” Cosgrove said. The family-run operator, now in its third generation, aims to maintain the park's traditional family values while elevating its offerings.

Stonham Barns Park features over 40 shops, eateries, and a variety of recreational activities. Under new ownership, the park is expected to see increased employment opportunities and a boost in local tourism. The Mid-Suffolk Showground, a key asset, will continue to host events, potentially expanding its calendar under Cosgrove's management.

David Hinrichsen, partner at FRP Advisory, who advised on the sale, noted: “Cosgrove Leisure Parks UK is an experienced, family-run operator with a track record of investing in the parks it acquires, and it is well placed to take Stonham Barns Park forward.”

The acquisition comes as the leisure and tourism sector sees renewed investment in experiential destinations. For travel professionals, the deal underscores the growing trend of family-run operators scaling through strategic acquisitions, similar to moves seen in other segments such as Travel + Leisure Co.'s expansion into Thailand.

Cosgrove's commitment to modernisation and community engagement positions Stonham Barns Park to attract both domestic and international visitors. The park's mix of retail, dining, and activities offers a model for integrated leisure destinations that appeal to a broad demographic, from families to event organisers.

As the travel industry continues to recover, investments in regional leisure parks like Stonham Barns Park highlight the importance of diversifying offerings to drive repeat visitation. The park's location in Suffolk, a county known for its countryside and coastal attractions, adds to its appeal for both day-trippers and longer stays.

Cosgrove Leisure Parks UK has not disclosed the financial terms of the acquisition. The company plans to roll out improvements in phases, with initial upgrades expected in the coming months.
