Crystal Cruises has officially commenced construction of its latest ocean vessel, Crystal Grace, with a ceremonial steel cutting at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy. The event marks a key milestone in the line's fleet expansion under the ownership of the Lefebvre family and Abercrombie & Kent Travel Group.
Scheduled for delivery in May 2028, Crystal Grace is designed to blend the brand's heritage of elegant service with contemporary amenities. The vessel will offer expansive suites, including the line's first-ever Owner's Suite, and culinary experiences from globally renowned chefs Nobu Matsuhisa and Massimiliano Alajmo. Broadway-style entertainment and curated itineraries will round out the onboard experience.
Executive Perspectives on the Build
Cristina Levis, CEO of Abercrombie & Kent Travel Group, emphasized the strategic direction behind the newbuild. “As we look to the future, we are focused on creating ships that feel both deeply rooted in Crystal’s heritage and unmistakably modern,” she said. The partnership with Fincantieri, known for its craftsmanship and precision, continues to be pivotal in realizing Crystal's vision.
Luigi Matarazzo, General Manager of the Merchant Ships Division at Fincantieri, highlighted the significance of the project. “The steel cutting of Crystal Grace is a moment of great pride for our team and a significant milestone in our relationship with Crystal and the Lefebvre family,” he stated.
The inaugural voyage is set for 11 June 2028, departing from Civitavecchia to Fusina, offering guests a preview of the line's renewed focus on immersive travel. Crystal continues to redefine luxury at sea, building on its legacy of exceptional service and sophisticated travel experiences.
For travel professionals, the newbuild signals a continued investment in the ultra-luxury cruise segment, where demand remains robust. As the industry evolves, operators like Crystal are betting on larger, more amenity-rich vessels to attract high-net-worth travelers. The addition of an Owner's Suite also reflects a trend toward personalization and exclusivity in cruise accommodations.
Meanwhile, the broader luxury travel landscape is seeing shifts in guest preferences. For instance, Maldives luxury resorts are diversifying their guest mix as geopolitical disruptions impact traditional source markets. Similarly, SO/ Maldives CEO Olivier Moies-Delval highlights bespoke luxury and conscious travel demand, underscoring the importance of tailored experiences across all luxury travel sectors.
With Crystal Grace, the line is positioning itself to compete directly with other ultra-luxury players such as Silversea, Regent Seven Seas, and Seabourn. The ship's design and partnerships aim to differentiate it in a crowded market, where culinary excellence and suite size are key battlegrounds.
As the travel industry continues to recover and evolve, newbuild announcements like this provide a barometer of confidence among cruise operators. Crystal's commitment to Fincantieri also reinforces the shipyard's role as a premier builder for the luxury segment.
