dnata, the global air and travel services provider, has officially launched operations at Western Sydney International Nancy-Bird Walton Airport (WSI), marking a significant expansion of its footprint in Australia's aviation sector. The company supported the airport's inaugural passenger flights, providing inflight catering for the first domestic departure on 25 October and ground handling for the first international arrival on 26 October.

Strategic investments at WSI

Beyond day-to-day services, dnata is making substantial long-term commitments to the region. The company is investing A$32 million in a new cargo terminal at WSI, scheduled to open in December. This facility will have an annual capacity of 60,000 tonnes of cargo and is expected to create around 50 direct jobs initially, with potential for further growth as demand increases.

In addition, dnata is constructing a dedicated inflight catering centre at WSI, slated for completion in 2027. Once operational, the facility will produce up to three million meals annually and is projected to generate more than 200 direct jobs over the next decade. Until then, dnata will continue to provide catering services from its existing operations at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport.

Gareth Rees, Regional CEO of dnata Catering & Retail, highlighted the strategic importance of the new facilities. “Our new catering facility represents a significant investment in the region and our future capabilities,” he said.

Premium lounge and broader impact

dnata will also operate The Rayleigh Lounge at WSI, a premium lounge experience scheduled to open in November. This addition positions dnata as a comprehensive service provider at the new airport, covering everything from ground handling to passenger amenities.

The expansion strengthens dnata's already substantial presence in Australia. The company currently employs approximately 8,000 people across the country and supports more than 107,000 aircraft movements annually. With the addition of WSI, dnata is well-positioned to capitalise on the airport's growth trajectory, which is expected to reshape the Australian travel market.

Western Sydney International opened with an Air New Zealand flight from Auckland, marking a new era for aviation in the region. As the airport develops, dnata's integrated services will play a crucial role in supporting airlines and passengers alike.

For travel professionals, dnata's move underscores the growing importance of Western Sydney as a hub. The airport's strategic location and planned connectivity, including future bus links to Canberra, are set to enhance travel options for both leisure and business travellers.
