Emirates SkyCargo has completed the transport of Altair-1, the UAE's first commercial AI-enabled satellite, from its home base at Dubai World Central to Los Angeles International Airport. The satellite, developed by Orbitworks, is the inaugural unit of the Altair constellation and is scheduled for launch in October 2026.
The mission underscores the cargo carrier's growing role in handling sensitive aerospace equipment, a niche that demands precision, security, and meticulous planning. Emirates SkyCargo deployed a dedicated team to oversee the satellite's journey, ensuring it arrived safely and on schedule.
A milestone for the UAE's space sector
Altair-1 is equipped with a suite of advanced sensors, including optical, infrared, thermal, and radio-frequency (RF) capabilities. These instruments will support applications such as environmental monitoring, disaster response, and maritime awareness, providing critical data to governments and commercial clients.
Badr Abbas, Divisional Senior Vice President of Emirates SkyCargo, highlighted the significance of the shipment. "We are proud to support Orbitworks in this historic move," he said. "This mission reflects the UAE's growing reputation as a hub for innovation and specialised logistics."
Schahan Sediqi, General Manager of Orbitworks, praised the collaboration. "The development of Altair-1 is a historic moment for the UAE's space ambitions," he noted. "Emirates SkyCargo's expertise was instrumental in delivering our satellite safely to its launch site."
Expanding freighter capacity and network
Emirates SkyCargo has been steadily expanding its freighter fleet and route network to meet rising demand for specialised cargo services. The carrier recently added several Boeing 777 freighters, boosting its global reach to more than 60 destinations. This expansion aligns with its strategy to provide vital cargo capacity and flexibility amid ongoing global logistics challenges.
The airline's investment in freighter capacity is part of a broader push to support high-value and time-sensitive shipments, from pharmaceuticals to aerospace components. The successful transport of Altair-1 reinforces Emirates SkyCargo's position as a trusted partner for the aerospace industry.
For travel professionals, the development signals a growing intersection between aviation logistics and the space economy. As more countries and private companies pursue satellite launches, carriers with specialised handling capabilities stand to benefit. Emirates SkyCargo's move also complements the airline's wider commercial strategy, which includes extending discounted fares across 60 destinations and enhancing its loyalty offerings through new rail partnerships.
The UAE's space sector has been gaining momentum, with initiatives like the Emirates Mars Mission and the recent launch of the MBZ-SAT Earth observation satellite. Orbitworks, a joint venture between UAE-based strategic investment firm and U.S. space technology company, aims to build a constellation of AI-enabled satellites for commercial and government use.
Emirates SkyCargo's involvement in this mission highlights the airline's ability to handle complex logistics that require a high degree of coordination and security. The carrier's team worked closely with Orbitworks and launch partners to ensure compliance with all regulatory and safety requirements.
As the global space industry expands, the demand for reliable airfreight services is expected to grow. Emirates SkyCargo's investment in its fleet and network positions it well to capture a share of this emerging market, while also supporting the UAE's broader economic diversification goals.
