Etihad Airways has introduced a new international summer deployment programme for Emirati airport trainees, marking the first time the Abu Dhabi-based carrier has sent UAE Nationals abroad as part of its Airports and Ground Operations Programmes. The initiative is designed to provide practical operational experience and cross-cultural exposure, supporting career development within Etihad's expanding global network.

Programme Structure and Deployment

The programme begins with a foundation phase at Zayed International Airport, where trainees gain hands-on experience in core airport functions including check-in, boarding, and baggage operations. Following this initial training, seven Emiratis will be deployed to Etihad's international teams in Copenhagen, Paris, Phuket, and Kuala Lumpur during the peak summer travel season. This real-world application allows trainees to refine their skills while collaborating with colleagues across different markets.

Dr. Nadia Bastaki, Chief People, Government and Corporate Affairs Officer at Etihad Airways, emphasised the strategic importance of nurturing local talent. "We have invested in programmes that combine world-class operational training with meaningful international exposure," she said. Captain Majed Al Marzouqi, Chief Operations & Guest Officer, added that the initiative prepares Emirati professionals to deliver world-class airport operations and represent the UAE on a global stage.

The deployment aligns with Etihad's broader Emiratisation strategy, which aims to create long-term career pathways for UAE Nationals and support the airline's operational growth. By embedding trainees in international stations, Etihad is building a pipeline of skilled professionals who understand both local and global operational standards.

This move comes as Gulf carriers increasingly invest in homegrown talent to sustain rapid network expansion. Etihad's approach mirrors similar initiatives seen across the region, such as Riyadh Air's recent entry into the Indian market, which also underscores the importance of skilled personnel in new route launches.

The programme is expected to play a crucial role in developing the next generation of Emirati aviation talent, strengthening Abu Dhabi's position as a global aviation hub. For travel professionals, this signals Etihad's commitment to operational excellence and its ability to maintain high service standards across its network.

Industry observers note that such training initiatives are vital for airlines facing talent shortages in specialised ground operations roles. By investing early in career development, Etihad is positioning itself to compete effectively with other major carriers in the region and beyond.

The summer deployment also offers a practical model for other airlines looking to enhance their workforce capabilities. As the travel industry continues to recover and expand, programmes like this one demonstrate how carriers can blend local talent development with international operational needs.
