Finland is turning its viral single-basket phenomenon into a high-end travel experience, with Business Finland inviting 16 international singles to a culinary matchmaking event in February 2027. The Finnish Dinner Date will take place in Helsinki and Tampere, offering participants a candlelit tasting menu designed to showcase the country's food culture and natural ingredients.

The initiative builds on the success of Sinkkukori, or single basket, a social trend where shoppers place a pink basket in their grocery cart to signal they are open to meeting someone. Now, the tourism board is adapting that concept for a global audience, positioning Finland as a destination for meaningful, food-led travel.

Heli Jimenez, Senior Director of International Marketing at Business Finland, said: "Food brings Finns together, and now we are inviting travellers to join us in a truly one-of-a-kind way." The event is part of a broader strategy to highlight Finnish cuisine, which often flies under the radar compared to other European culinary traditions.

A multisensory journey through Finnish food

Selected participants will enjoy a tasting menu crafted by chefs Adele Kinnunen and Henry Tikkanen, both known for their modern interpretations of Nordic ingredients. The menu will emphasize seasonal produce, forest foraging, and the connection between Finnish food and the country's landscapes.

The event is designed to be more than a meal—it is a multisensory experience that includes storytelling, local traditions, and the chance to explore Helsinki and Tampere. For travel professionals, the event underscores a growing trend of using unique culinary experiences to attract niche traveler segments.

Applications are open until 10 November 2026, with winners announced on 1 December via Visit Finland's social media channels. To apply, singles must submit a video answering what they would serve on a dinner date, using the hashtag #FinnishDinnerDate.

Finland's tourism board has been active in promoting the country as a year-round destination, and this event aligns with efforts to boost off-season travel. The country's reputation as the world's happiest nation adds a compelling hook for international visitors.

For travel agents and tour operators, the Finnish Dinner Date offers a potential angle for packaging culinary and experiential travel. It also reflects a broader industry shift toward immersive, personalized experiences, as seen in other recent initiatives like Asia's food-led travel boom and A&K Sanctuary's Nile Seray culinary program.

Business Finland's move also highlights the importance of social media in driving engagement. The video-based application process is designed to generate buzz and encourage sharing, a tactic that has proven effective in destination marketing.

With the event set for February 2027, there is ample time for travel trade partners to incorporate the Finnish Dinner Date into their offerings. The initiative is a clear example of how destinations can leverage local culture to create memorable, shareable experiences.
