Greater Bay Airlines (GBA), the Hong Kong-based value carrier, has announced a seasonal route linking Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) with Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG). The service will run from 3 September to 22 October 2025, with three roundtrip flights per week scheduled on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.

Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province, is often referred to as the "City of Eternal Spring" due to its mild climate. The city serves as a key gateway for travelers heading to Yunnan's UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites, such as the Stone Forest Scenic Area, and other attractions like Dianchi Lake and the Yunnan Ethnic Village. GBA's new flights aim to capture demand from both leisure tourists and business travelers during the autumn peak season.

Route Details and Booking

The seasonal schedule offers departures from Hong Kong on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. Tickets are available through GBA's website, mobile app, and travel agent partners. GBA, which began operations in July 2022, operates a fleet of Boeing 737-800 and 737-9 aircraft. Its current network includes destinations such as Bangkok (BKK), Taipei (TPE), Tokyo (NRT), and Manila (MNL).

This addition comes as Hong Kong-based carriers continue to expand regional connectivity. Notably, Hong Kong Airlines refreshed its panda-themed livery earlier this year, underscoring the city's role as a hub for leisure travel to mainland China. For travel agents and tour operators, the Kunming route offers a new option for packaging Yunnan itineraries, which often combine cultural experiences with natural landscapes.

Industry observers note that seasonal services like this allow airlines to test demand without committing to year-round operations. GBA's move aligns with broader trends in the Asia-Pacific aviation market, where carriers are adjusting capacity to match seasonal travel patterns. The route also complements existing services from other airlines on the Hong Kong–Kunming sector, providing more choice for passengers.

For travel professionals, the launch represents an opportunity to promote Yunnan as a destination. Kunming's status as a transportation hub makes it a convenient entry point for multi-destination trips within the province. Agents can leverage GBA's competitive pricing to attract cost-conscious travelers while upselling add-ons such as hotel stays or guided tours.

GBA's decision to operate the service through late October suggests a focus on the autumn foliage season, which draws visitors to Yunnan's mountainous regions. The airline has not indicated whether the route will be extended beyond the current window, but positive load factors could lead to a permanent addition.

Travel advisors should note that booking windows for seasonal flights are typically shorter, so early promotion to clients interested in Yunnan travel is advisable. GBA's distribution through the GDS systems used by most agents ensures easy ticketing and integration with existing booking workflows.
