The Tejon Indian Tribe and Hard Rock International have officially broken ground on a $725 million expansion of Hard Rock Casino Tejon, transforming the property into a full-scale resort and entertainment complex. The project, slated to open in summer 2028, will add a 406-room hotel, a Rock Spa, new dining venues, and a significant expansion of the gaming floor.
Located in Mettler, California, roughly 15 miles south of Bakersfield, the expansion is designed to solidify the casino's role as a key tourism driver in the Southern San Joaquin Valley. The new hotel will offer king and double-queen rooms, including 119 suites, along with resort-style pools and a 13-treatment-room Rock Spa. The casino floor will grow by 900 slot machines, bringing the total to 3,000.
Jobs and economic impact
The construction phase will generate approximately 1,500 jobs, and once operational, the expanded resort will add 350 permanent positions. This development is expected to boost local employment and attract visitors from across California and beyond, particularly along the I-5 corridor.
Octavio Escobedo III, Chairman of the Tejon Indian Tribe, emphasized the milestone: "Today marks another historic milestone for the Tejon Indian Tribe and the vision we have worked generations to achieve." The project also includes a Centre Bar and multi-use convention and event spaces, positioning the resort for MICE business.
Mike Bean, Property President of Hard Rock Casino Tejon, noted that the hotel and amenities will elevate the guest experience and draw a wider audience. The expansion follows the casino's successful opening in November 2025, which quickly established it as a premier destination along the I-5 corridor.
For travel professionals, this expansion signals growing opportunities in the region's hospitality and events sector. The addition of convention space and a full-service hotel makes the property a viable option for group bookings and corporate events, complementing other regional developments. As the resort market evolves, similar expansions are being seen elsewhere, such as Ritz-Carlton Naples Tiburón's recent renovation and Hilton's luxury leadership appointments in Asia Pacific.
The Hard Rock Casino Tejon expansion is part of a broader trend of tribal gaming properties investing heavily in non-gaming amenities to attract a wider demographic. With the hotel and spa, the property aims to compete not just as a casino but as a full-fledged resort destination.
Construction is already underway, and the project is expected to be completed by summer 2028, in time for the peak travel season. The development underscores the ongoing growth of the hospitality sector in California's Central Valley.
