Hilton has taken a significant step in its Indonesia expansion by signing its first property in Batam, the Hilton Garden Inn Batam City Centre. The 199-room hotel, developed by PT Sabang Raya Investama, is scheduled to open in 2028 and will be strategically positioned in Batam's central business district.
The location is designed to capitalize on Batam's growing appeal as a business and leisure hub, with easy access to commercial and retail centers, ferry terminals serving Singapore and Malaysia, and Hang Nadim International Airport. This connectivity is expected to drive demand from corporate travelers, meeting planners, and event organizers.
Strategic positioning in a growing market
Batam has emerged as a key destination in the Riau Islands, benefiting from its proximity to Singapore—just a short ferry ride away—and its role as a gateway to the Indonesia–Malaysia–Singapore growth triangle. The new hotel will cater to a mix of business, leisure, and wellness travelers, including those seeking medical-related stays, a segment that has been expanding in the region.
Maria Ariizumi, vice president of Development for South East Asia & Australasia at Hilton, highlighted the destination's potential: “Batam continues to grow as an important business and leisure destination, supported by its close proximity to Singapore and Malaysia, strong connectivity and expanding visitor economy.”
The Hilton Garden Inn Batam City Centre will feature a range of amenities tailored to both corporate and leisure guests, including an all-day dining restaurant, a bar, a fitness center, a swimming pool, and more than 900 square meters of meeting and event space. The property will also participate in Hilton Honors, the company's loyalty program, offering members exclusive benefits.
This signing underscores Hilton's broader momentum in Indonesia, a market that has become a focal point for international hotel groups. Hilton currently operates 18 hotels across the archipelago, with an additional 16 properties in the pipeline. The Batam project adds to a portfolio that includes recent openings and signings in key cities such as Jakarta, Bali, and Surabaya.
The development also aligns with Hilton's strategy to grow its midscale and upper-midscale brands in Asia Pacific, where the Hilton Garden Inn brand has seen strong uptake. The brand's focus on providing reliable, comfortable stays with modern amenities resonates with both business and leisure travelers in secondary cities and emerging destinations.
For travel professionals, the Batam property represents an opportunity to tap into a market that is increasingly attractive for corporate events and incentive travel, given its accessibility from Singapore and its growing infrastructure. The hotel's meeting space and strategic location are likely to position it as a preferred venue for regional conferences and business gatherings.
Hilton's expansion in Indonesia is part of a wider push across Southeast Asia, where the company has been adding properties in Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines. The group's recent moves include the debut of its Tapestry Collection in Vietnam, reflecting a diversified brand strategy to capture different market segments.
As Batam continues to develop its tourism and business infrastructure, the entry of an international brand like Hilton is expected to raise the bar for hospitality standards in the city. The Hilton Garden Inn Batam City Centre will compete with existing properties while also helping to grow the overall market, particularly in the MICE and corporate travel segments.
The hotel's opening in 2028 will come at a time when the region's travel industry is projected to have fully recovered from the pandemic, with sustained growth in cross-border travel between Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia. For hoteliers and investors, the project signals confidence in Batam's long-term potential as a destination.
Hilton's commitment to Indonesia is further evidenced by its ongoing development pipeline, which includes a mix of full-service and select-service brands. The company's ability to secure prime locations in emerging cities like Batam will be key to maintaining its competitive edge in the region.
Travel agents and tour operators looking to expand their offerings in Indonesia should note the upcoming Hilton Garden Inn as a new option for clients seeking reliable, midscale accommodations with strong business amenities. The hotel's proximity to ferry terminals and the airport will also appeal to leisure travelers looking for a convenient base to explore the Riau Islands.
