Holland America Line is deepening its commitment to Norway’s fjord country with a significant itinerary update for the 2027 season. The cruise line will add calls at Flåm and Hellesylt to five seven-day voyages aboard the Rotterdam, giving passengers more time to experience two of the region’s most celebrated natural wonders: the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord and the Storfjorden gateway to Geirangerfjord.
This move reflects a broader industry trend toward longer, more immersive port stays. Rather than a brief stop, guests will have extended hours ashore to explore steep-sided valleys, cascading waterfalls, and the quiet villages that define Norway’s coastline. The enhanced itineraries are designed for travellers who value unhurried moments and dramatic scenery.
What the New Itineraries Offer
The updated sailings are divided into two groups. Three departures—May 30, June 27, and August 1, 2027—combine Oslo, Kristiansand, Sandnes (Stavanger), and Flåm with scenic cruising through Sognefjord and Oslofjord. Two additional sailings on July 25 and August 8, 2027, focus on fjord country with calls at Eidfjord, Hellesylt, Ålesund, and Bergen, plus scenic passages through Hardangerfjord and Storfjorden.
In Flåm, passengers can ride the Flåmsbana Railway, one of the world’s most scenic rail journeys, which climbs from the fjord to the mountain station at Myrdal. Hellesylt places guests near dramatic viewpoints and thundering waterfalls, including the Seven Sisters and the Bridal Veil. The Rotterdam’s size allows access to ports that larger vessels cannot reach, a key advantage for cruise lines seeking to differentiate their Northern Europe product.
Holland America Line is deploying three ships across Northern Europe in 2027: Rotterdam, Nieuw Statendam, and Zuiderdam. The broader programme includes voyages from seven to 21 days covering Iceland, Greenland, the British Isles, Scandinavia, and the Baltic. This builds on the line’s heritage—founded in Rotterdam with more than 150 years of seafaring expertise—and positions Northern Europe as a signature region for the brand.
For travel advisors and agents, these updated itineraries offer a clear selling point: extended time in port translates to higher guest satisfaction and more opportunities to sell shore excursions. The Flåmsbana Railway, for example, is a premium add-on that appeals to luxury travellers. Holland America Line has also invested in land-side upgrades, including a $70 million renovation of its Denali Lodge for Alaska cruisetours, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing the overall guest experience.
The 2027 fjord-focused sailings are open for booking now. For detailed itineraries, shore excursion options, and group booking inquiries, travel professionals can consult their preferred sales representative or visit the Holland America Line website. The line’s broader Northern Europe programme also includes calls at Honfleur and La Roche-Guyon on other itineraries, offering overnight and late-departure options that mirror the extended fjord calls.
As the cruise industry continues to recover and evolve, operators like Holland America Line are betting on depth over breadth. The addition of Flåm and Hellesylt to the 2027 schedule is a clear signal that the line sees value in giving passengers more time to connect with a destination—a strategy that resonates with today’s travellers, who increasingly seek authentic, unhurried experiences.
