Holland America Line (HAL) is investing US$70 million in a multi-year overhaul of its Denali Lodge in Alaska, with work scheduled to finish before the 2027 cruisetour season. The project aims to expand capacity and elevate the land-based experience to match the line's onboard product, targeting the growing demand for premium Alaska cruisetours.
What's Already in Place
Guests traveling this season will find renovated accommodations and refreshed public spaces in the Cottonwood and Canyon Lodge buildings. The design leans toward a contemporary lodge aesthetic, moving away from the previous motel-style look. Outside, an enhanced riverside interpretive trail now includes new scenic viewpoints, and improved wayfinding helps guests navigate the sprawling property.
HAL has also upgraded its food and beverage offerings, with menus developed under Culinary Ambassador Ethan Stowell that highlight Alaska and Pacific Northwest ingredients. A new Outpost Coffee + Provisions concept combines a coffee bar with a convenience store for grab-and-go mornings and late-night snacks. At Karstens Public House, seating has been expanded to accommodate more guests before and after rail journeys.
Final Enhancements Ahead of 80th Alaska Season
The remaining work includes new guest-room buildings that will replace older structures and add dozens of rooms, giving HAL more flexibility during peak periods. Plans also call for a redesigned main lodge interior, refreshed public spaces, a fully renovated coffee venue, and further refinements to outdoor areas and amenities. All of this is on track for completion before the 2027 season, which marks HAL's 80th year in Alaska. The line will offer 19 cruisetour options ranging from nine to 17 nights.
For travel professionals, this upgrade directly improves the land-tour component of Alaska cruisetours, turning Denali nights from a simple stopover into a highlight. Renovated rooms, better dining, improved trails, and smarter public spaces reduce logistical friction and enhance guest satisfaction. The timing aligns with HAL's milestone anniversary and the broader trend of cruise lines investing in land-based assets to control the full guest experience.
This development follows similar moves by other operators. Explora Journeys has detailed its Alaska 2027 itineraries for the Explora III debut, and Royal Caribbean Group recently opened Alaska's largest cruise terminal in Seward, signaling continued investment in the region's infrastructure.
HAL's Denali Lodge upgrade is a strategic move to capture more of the Alaska cruisetour market, offering agents and operators a stronger product to sell. With the wilderness outside unchanged, the lodge experience now aims to be as memorable as the first glimpse of Denali itself.
