Hotel Okura Co., Ltd. has confirmed plans to open the Hotel Okura Thermal Resort & Spa Cappadocia in 2028, marking the Japanese luxury operator's first property in Türkiye. The resort will be located in Mustafapaşa, a historic village within the Cappadocia UNESCO World Heritage site, and is being developed in partnership with KK Universal.

The project will integrate four buildings, including preserved stone structures and a restored mansion, designed to complement the region's distinctive landscape. The resort's architecture aims to balance Okura's refined aesthetic with the local vernacular, offering guests an experience rooted in both Japanese omotenashi and Anatolian culture.

Wellness and dining as core draws

At the heart of the resort will be a 3,500-square-metre spa and wellness centre, billed as the largest in the region. Facilities include thermal baths, a hammam steam bath, and both indoor and outdoor pools. The spa is expected to position the property as a destination for wellness tourism, a segment seeing strong growth across the Mediterranean and Middle East.

Dining will feature three venues, including a teppanyaki restaurant named Sazanka, which will serve as a signature outlet. The inclusion of Japanese cuisine in a Turkish setting reflects a broader trend among luxury hoteliers to offer culturally hybrid F&B concepts.

Toshihiro Ogita, President of Hotel Okura Co., Ltd., said: “We are honoured to embark on this project together with KK Universal and are delighted to bring the Okura brand to Türkiye. Our commitment to offering world-class hospitality, blending the elegance of Japanese culture with local charm, is unwavering.”

The resort is situated approximately 55 km from Nevşehir Cappadocia Airport, providing reasonable access for international arrivals via Istanbul or direct flights to the region. For travel advisors and tour operators, the property adds a new luxury option in a destination known for its hot air balloon rides, cave churches, and boutique hotels.

This development comes as luxury hotel groups increasingly target Türkiye's Cappadocia region, which has seen a rise in high-end openings from brands such as Bask Gili Meno and others repositioning for upscale travelers. The Okura entry signals confidence in the destination's long-term appeal for both leisure and wellness tourism.

Hotel Okura operates properties across Japan, Asia, and the Americas, and this move into Türkiye represents a strategic expansion into a new geographic market. The company's focus on thermal and spa facilities aligns with growing consumer demand for health-oriented travel experiences, a trend also evident in recent luxury cruise and resort launches.

For hoteliers and travel-tech vendors, the project underscores the importance of integrating wellness infrastructure into new builds. The resort's scale and positioning may also influence how other luxury operators approach the Anatolian market.
