DoubleDragon Corporation has reached a construction milestone at its Hotel101-Niseko in Hokkaido, Japan, with the building façade now complete. The 482-room property is scheduled to open in December 2026, marking the first time a Filipino hotel chain has built and operated a hotel in Japan.

Strategic Expansion into Japan's Ski Market

Situated in the renowned ski destination of Niseko, the hotel is designed to attract international visitors seeking the region's famous powder snow and scenic beauty. Amenities include two indoor swimming pools, a hot mineral bath, a sauna, a business centre, a fitness gym, an HBNB all-day dining restaurant, a children's playground, and dedicated facilities for skiing enthusiasts. The property is well-positioned to capitalize on growing demand from North American travelers, especially with direct flights now available from major U.S. and Canadian cities to Hokkaido.

DoubleDragon's entry into Japan follows the successful launch of Hotel101-Madrid in March 2026, which achieved a record single-day occupancy rate. The company aims to generate recurring revenue in Japanese Yen from its Niseko venture, complementing its existing operations in the Philippines and Spain. This expansion aligns with Hotel101 Global's broader vision of establishing one million uniform rooms across 100 countries.

Industry observers note that Niseko has become a hotspot for luxury and experiential travel, with properties like Octola III also opening in December 2026 in Finnish Lapland, signaling a trend toward exclusive winter destinations. Meanwhile, the cruise sector is seeing similar growth, with MSC World Asia set to debut a pan-Asian street food venue aboard its December 2026 ship.

DoubleDragon's move into Japan also reflects a broader shift in the hospitality industry, where Asian hotel groups are expanding their footprint globally. The company's strategy of standardized, tech-enabled properties under the Hotel101 brand aims to appeal to both business and leisure travelers seeking consistency and value.

For travel professionals, the opening of Hotel101-Niseko represents a new option in the competitive Hokkaido market, which already includes established players like Hilton Niseko Village and The Vale Niseko. The property's 482 rooms will add significant inventory to the region, which has seen a surge in demand from ski enthusiasts and luxury travelers alike.

DoubleDragon's ability to execute on its international expansion plans will be closely watched by industry analysts. The company's success in Madrid and its ambitious targets for Niseko could pave the way for further entries into other key markets, including North America and Europe.

As the travel industry continues to recover and evolve, properties like Hotel101-Niseko highlight the importance of strategic location, brand consistency, and operational efficiency. With its December 2026 opening, the hotel is poised to become a significant player in the global hospitality landscape.
