Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) has expanded its footprint in Uttar Pradesh with the opening of Taj Palace in Lucknow. The 181-room property, located in the Gomti Nagar district, was inaugurated by Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, underscoring the state's growing importance in India's hospitality landscape.
Puneet Chhatwal, Managing Director and CEO of IHCL, framed the launch within the context of Lucknow's rapid development. "The opening of the second Taj hotel is reflective of the state's growing prominence and our commitment to the region," he said, citing infrastructure upgrades and rising investment as key drivers.
Design and amenities
Taj Palace, Lucknow blends contemporary architecture with elements inspired by the city's Mughal-era heritage. The hotel offers a range of dining options, including Bistrot café, House of Ming for Chinese cuisine, Machan for all-day dining, and the Shadow & Oak whisky bar. Wellness facilities include J Wellness Circle, a fitness centre, and a rooftop pool.
The property introduces The Chambers, a members-only business club, to Uttar Pradesh. This private venue is designed for meetings and events, catering to the corporate and MICE segments that are increasingly active in the region.
Santosh Shetty, General Manager of Taj Palace, Lucknow, commented on the hotel's positioning: "Taj Palace, Lucknow reflects the city's evolving character, blending contemporary elegance with nature-inspired design."
Lucknow, known for its culinary traditions and architectural landmarks, is a hub for commerce, education, and tourism. The new Taj Palace aims to serve this dynamic market, offering a modern sanctuary in the heart of the city.
IHCL's expansion in Uttar Pradesh aligns with broader trends in Indian hospitality, where secondary cities are gaining traction among both domestic and international travellers. The group's portfolio now includes multiple Taj properties across the state, with Lucknow joining Agra and Varanasi as key destinations.
For travel professionals, the opening signals increased capacity in a city that has seen steady growth in business travel and MICE activity. The inclusion of The Chambers is particularly notable for corporate planners seeking exclusive venues.
IHCL's move also reflects a wider industry pattern of hoteliers targeting tier-2 cities in India, as infrastructure improvements make these locations more accessible. Similar developments are underway elsewhere, such as the recent debut of Meliá Aurea Nha Trang in Vietnam, which targets the upper-upscale leisure segment.
With Lucknow's airport connectivity and growing business district, the Taj Palace is positioned to capture both transient and group demand. The hotel's rooftop pool and whisky bar add lifestyle appeal, potentially attracting a younger demographic.
As IHCL continues to expand its domestic portfolio, the Lucknow property serves as a benchmark for how heritage-rich cities can accommodate modern hospitality standards. The company's investment in Uttar Pradesh is expected to bolster its presence in the region, with further openings anticipated.
