ITC Hotels Limited has formalised a management agreement for a new Welcomhotel by ITC Hotels in Rajgir, Bihar, marking another step in the group's expansion across India's emerging Tier II and Tier III cities. The signing ceremony was attended by Bihar's Chief Minister, Samrat Choudhary, and ITC Hotels' Managing Director, Anil Chadha, underscoring the state government's support for hospitality-led tourism development.
The property, developed in partnership with Kalsi Buildcon Private Limited, will be built on a 2.67-acre site and will offer 107 guest rooms and suites. Facilities include an all-day dining restaurant, as well as extensive banqueting and outdoor event spaces designed to accommodate weddings, conferences, and large social gatherings. The hotel aims to blend modern hospitality with the region's cultural heritage, positioning Rajgir as a destination for experiential travel.
Strategic expansion in Bihar
Anil Chadha commented on the company's long-term vision for the state: "Bihar is home to some of India's most significant cultural and spiritual destinations, and we see immense long-term potential for hospitality-led tourism in the state." He emphasised that this strategic partnership would enhance Bihar's tourism landscape, leveraging the group's expertise in managing upscale and luxury properties.
Sumeet Singh Kalsi, Director of Kalsi Buildcon, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, highlighting Rajgir's historical significance and its potential to attract global visitors. "Our vision is to create a landmark offering that reflects the essence of this region," Kalsi stated.
This new venture follows the recent signing of an ITC Patna hotel and the opening of Welcomhotel Bodhgaya Hotel & Convention Centre, further cementing ITC Hotels' presence in Bihar. The expansion aligns with growing interest in historical and experiential travel, particularly in emerging Tier II and Tier III cities across India.
For travel professionals, the development signals increased accommodation capacity in a region known for Buddhist pilgrimage sites and ancient Nalanda University ruins. Rajgir, located about 100 kilometres from Patna, is accessible via road and the nearest airport at Gaya, which also serves Bodhgaya. The property is expected to cater to both leisure travellers and MICE segments, with its banqueting and conference facilities.
ITC Hotels' broader strategy includes strengthening its footprint in India's less-penetrated markets, where demand for branded hospitality is rising. The group's portfolio already includes properties in Bodhgaya, Patna, and other key cities, and this addition reinforces its commitment to the state.
The Rajgir Welcomhotel is part of a wave of hotel developments in Bihar, as state and private stakeholders invest in tourism infrastructure. For tour operators and travel agents, the new property offers an additional option for clients seeking cultural and spiritual experiences in eastern India.
