Jeddah Airports and global aviation consultancy SJ Group have signed an extension to their partnership aimed at accelerating the development of King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA). The agreement, formalized on 23 September 2026 at the Passenger Terminal Expo Asia in Singapore, underscores a shared commitment to modernizing the gateway that serves as a key hub for Hajj and Umrah travel.

The extended collaboration builds on Jeddah Airports' deep local knowledge and SJ Group's international expertise in aviation planning and programme delivery. Together, the two entities will focus on balancing capacity growth, operational resilience, sustainability, and passenger experience at KAIA, which is central to Saudi Arabia's ambitions under Vision 2030.

Programme management and digital innovation

A core pillar of the renewed agreement is the enhancement of project delivery through end-to-end programme management, integrated planning, and digital innovation. This approach aims to streamline the execution of infrastructure projects at KAIA, ensuring that expansions and upgrades are delivered efficiently and to the highest standards.

“Extending our partnership with SJ Group represents an important step in the ongoing development journey of KAIA,” said Mazen Johar, CEO of Jeddah Airports. “Their global perspective combined with our operational expertise will help us elevate airport efficiency and operational capabilities to meet the demands of a rapidly growing aviation market.”

The partnership also places a strong emphasis on developing Jeddah Airports' aviation professionals. Through mentorship programmes, structured training in programme controls, engineering, and sustainability, and international project exchanges, the initiative aims to expose local talent to global best practices. This knowledge transfer is designed to build a skilled workforce capable of managing KAIA's long-term growth.

Chaly Mah, Chairman of SJ Group, expressed confidence in the partnership's potential to create lasting value. “This extension reflects the trust and momentum we have built together and our shared commitment to creating long-term value beyond infrastructure delivery,” he said. “We are proud to support Jeddah Airports in its journey to become a world-class aviation hub.”

The extended partnership aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, which targets serving over 90 million passengers annually by 2030. KAIA is positioned as a primary gateway for religious pilgrims, and the enhancements are expected to improve the overall travel experience for millions of visitors each year.

Industry observers note that such collaborations are becoming increasingly common as airports in the Middle East seek to leverage external expertise while nurturing local capabilities. The move also reflects a broader trend of knowledge-sharing partnerships across the region's aviation sector.

For travel professionals, the development signals continued investment in one of the region's busiest airports, with potential implications for airline operations, ground handling, and passenger services. As KAIA expands its capacity and modernizes its facilities, airlines and travel partners can expect improved infrastructure and a more seamless experience for passengers.

The partnership between Jeddah Airports and SJ Group is part of a wider effort to enhance airport operations across Saudi Arabia. Similar initiatives are underway at other major gateways, as the kingdom prepares to welcome an increasing number of international visitors under its tourism diversification plans.
