Maybourne, the London-based luxury hotel group behind Claridge's, The Connaught, and The Berkeley, has named José Silva as its new chairman. Silva brings more than four decades of hospitality leadership to the role, with a track record of transforming luxury brands and elevating iconic properties.
Silva's appointment comes as Maybourne prepares to broaden its international footprint. The group has been steadily expanding beyond its Mayfair and Knightsbridge strongholds, and Silva's strategic vision is expected to guide that growth without compromising the bespoke service that defines its properties.
A career defined by luxury leadership
Silva's most recent high-profile role was as chief executive of Jumeirah Group, where he repositioned the Dubai-based hotel company as a global luxury player. During his tenure, he oversaw the expansion of the Jumeirah portfolio and strengthened its reputation across key markets in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.
Prior to Jumeirah, Silva spent nearly 25 years with Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, holding senior operational and leadership positions. Notably, he served as general manager of the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris, where he led the property to an unprecedented five Michelin stars across its restaurants. That achievement cemented the George V's status as one of the world's most celebrated luxury hotels and demonstrated Silva's ability to drive both culinary and operational excellence.
His expertise in asset enhancement and brand positioning will be central to Maybourne's next chapter. The group's portfolio includes some of London's most storied addresses, and its expansion plans are expected to extend its signature blend of heritage and contemporary luxury to new destinations.
“José is one of the hospitality industry's most admired leaders,” said Marc Socker, CEO of Maybourne. “His deep operational expertise and commitment to excellence make him uniquely qualified to guide Maybourne through its next phase of growth.”
Silva expressed enthusiasm for the new role, saying, “I am honoured to join Maybourne as Chairman at such an exciting point in its evolution. I look forward to building on Maybourne's remarkable legacy and supporting its continued growth.”
The appointment aligns with a broader trend of veteran luxury operators taking the helm at established groups. For instance, Aman Group recently appointed Victor Clavell as COO to drive its own global expansion, underscoring the industry's focus on seasoned leadership for high-end growth.
Maybourne has not yet disclosed specific new locations, but the company says further announcements are expected in the coming months. The group's strategy is likely to mirror the success of other luxury hoteliers that have expanded into key gateway cities while maintaining a curated portfolio.
For travel professionals, Silva's appointment signals Maybourne's intent to compete aggressively in the upper echelons of the luxury market. His experience with both owner-operated and branded luxury hotels gives him a rare perspective on balancing brand consistency with local character—a challenge that many hotel groups face as they scale.
Silva's leadership will also be watched closely by the travel trade, as Maybourne's properties are a staple for high-end agents and tour operators. The group's commitment to exceptional guest experiences remains a cornerstone, and Silva's operational background suggests a hands-on approach to maintaining those standards.
As the luxury hospitality sector continues to recover and evolve, Maybourne's move to bring in a proven leader like Silva is a clear signal of its ambitions. With his guidance, the group is well positioned to navigate the complexities of global expansion while preserving the intimate, personalized service that has made its hotels icons.
