Journey Beyond, Australia's experiential tourism group, has introduced Island Connections, a new national brand consolidating its recently acquired SeaLink marine operations. The move unifies ferry and coastal services under a single identity, aiming to streamline access to some of the country's most remote and distinctive island destinations.
Island Connections will operate across Bruny Island in Tasmania, the Whitsundays, K'gari Fraser Island, the Tiwi Islands, Groote Eylandt, and the Darwin–Mandorah route. The integrated service is designed to deliver a seamless travel experience, linking guests to extraordinary locations nationwide. Journey Beyond's marine operations currently carry more than 400,000 passengers each year, with the group operating over 150 vessels and welcoming 2.6 million guests annually across its portfolio.
Unifying marine services, celebrating local character
Jennifer Vandekreeke, Managing Director of Journey Beyond's Experiences and Attractions division, underscored the strategic significance of the new brand. “What makes Island Connections exciting is the opportunity to bring these marine services together whilst celebrating what makes each destination unique,” she said. Vandekreeke emphasized the importance of supporting local communities and sharing the unique stories and character of these destinations with a broader audience.
The launch reflects a broader trend in the travel industry toward consolidating transport and experience offerings to enhance destination accessibility. Similar moves include Red Sea Global's unification of yacht services across AMAALA and Shura Island, and Loganair's orchestral tours to Scottish islands, both of which aim to create cohesive travel experiences around remote locations.
Bookings for Island Connections are now open, offering travelers the chance to explore Australia's unique island landscapes. The initiative is expected to enhance accessibility to these remote areas, fostering tourism and supporting local economies. For travel agents and tour operators, the unified booking platform simplifies itinerary planning for clients seeking off-the-beaten-path Australian experiences.
Journey Beyond's expansion into marine services follows its acquisition of SeaLink, a move that broadened its portfolio beyond rail and land-based experiences. The group now operates a diverse range of tourism products, including the iconic Ghan and Indian Pacific trains, as well as experiences in South Australia, the Northern Territory, and Queensland.
The Island Connections brand will also serve as a platform for storytelling, highlighting the cultural and natural heritage of each destination. From the rugged wilderness of Bruny Island to the Aboriginal heritage of the Tiwi Islands and Groote Eylandt, the service aims to connect travelers with authentic local experiences.
Industry observers note that such integrated marine networks can drive repeat visitation and longer stays, particularly in regions where ferry access is the primary gateway. The move also aligns with growing demand for sustainable and community-focused travel, as operators increasingly emphasize their role in preserving destination integrity.
With over 150 vessels in operation, Journey Beyond's marine division is a significant player in Australia's coastal tourism sector. The company's commitment to safety, reliability, and guest experience is expected to underpin the success of Island Connections as it rolls out across the country.
Travel professionals can expect further developments as Journey Beyond integrates its marine operations with its broader experiential offerings, potentially creating combined packages that leverage the group's rail, cruise, and land-based products.
