Korean Air has taken a decisive step in the global effort to combat illegal wildlife trafficking by signing the Buckingham Palace Declaration, making it the first Korean carrier to join the United for Wildlife Transport Taskforce. The initiative, established in March 2016 under the UK’s Royal Foundation, outlines 11 commitments designed to prevent traffickers from exploiting transport networks.
Under the declaration, Korean Air will implement enhanced security procedures, provide specialized training for employees, and refuse to transport any wildlife products suspected of being linked to illegal trade. The airline will also share information on illegal wildlife trade with other taskforce members, strengthening the collective ability to detect and disrupt trafficking routes.
Building on Conservation Efforts
This move builds on Korean Air’s existing conservation work. Earlier this year, the airline facilitated the repatriation of rescued Jewelled Geckos to New Zealand in collaboration with the New Zealand Department of Conservation. Such efforts underscore the carrier’s commitment to biodiversity preservation beyond its core aviation operations.
Lord William Hague, Co-Chair of United for Wildlife, welcomed Korean Air’s participation: “We’re delighted to welcome Korean Air to the Taskforce. By signing the Buckingham Palace Declaration, they join this growing global effort.” A Korean Air representative added, “Through rigorous monitoring and proactive cooperation, we will continue to prevent illegal trafficking and contribute to the preservation of global biodiversity.”
The airline’s involvement highlights the critical role that carriers such as Korean Air, Delta Air Lines, and others play in safeguarding global ecosystems. As travel networks expand, so does the risk of wildlife trafficking, making industry-wide collaboration essential. For travel professionals—from airline executives to tour operators—this development signals a growing expectation for carriers to integrate anti-trafficking measures into their operations.
Korean Air’s commitment also aligns with broader trends in sustainable tourism and responsible travel. For instance, Brazil Leverages Global BirdFair to Boost Wildlife Tourism from UK Market demonstrates how destinations can leverage wildlife conservation to attract tourists. Similarly, Social Media Fame Pushes Rare Wildlife to Crisis Point: Ecotourism Must Adapt underscores the need for the travel industry to address the unintended consequences of wildlife exposure.
For travel agents and tour operators, this news reinforces the importance of partnering with carriers that prioritize ethical practices. As Korean Air expands its network—including recent route enhancements like Korean Air and Delta Add Seattle, LA to Seamless Baggage Transfer Network—its commitment to combating wildlife trafficking adds a layer of responsibility that resonates with eco-conscious travelers.
The Buckingham Palace Declaration has been signed by over 100 transport and logistics companies worldwide, including major airlines, shipping lines, and freight forwarders. Korean Air’s entry into this coalition marks a significant milestone for the Asia-Pacific region, where wildlife trafficking remains a persistent challenge. By joining the taskforce, Korean Air not only enhances its own security protocols but also contributes to a global framework that protects endangered species from exploitation.
As the travel industry continues to recover and grow, initiatives like this remind stakeholders that sustainability and security go hand in hand. For Korean Air, this is not just a policy change but a strategic alignment with the values of modern travelers and the broader travel ecosystem.
