The Langham Hotels and Resorts has unveiled a new global event series, Luminaries in Residence, designed to bring guests closer to the creative world. The inaugural edition, titled “The Artistry of Ayanga,” is a photography exhibition now open at The Langham, Shanghai, Xintiandi, running until 10 September 2026.
The exhibition offers a behind-the-scenes look at Ayanga’s musical production “The Message,” featuring more than 25 photographs that capture the dedication and collaboration involved in adapting Mai Jia’s novel for the stage. Ayanga, a leading figure in Chinese musical theatre known for his role in “The Phantom of the Opera,” is the first Luminary in Residence.
Bob van den Oord, CEO of The Langham, said: “Ayanga’s dedication to his craft is truly inspiring, making him a fitting choice to open this new global initiative.” The series is part of the group’s “Your Story. Our Legacy.” campaign, which celebrates cultural ambassadors known as Langham Luminaries. Launched in 2025, the campaign highlights individuals from various fields whose journeys align with The Langham’s spirit. Ayanga joined this group in early 2026.
Global expansion and future collaborations
Following the Shanghai debut, Luminaries in Residence will expand to other Langham properties worldwide, with collaborations featuring notable figures such as Grammy-winning violinist Joshua Bell. The initiative aims to strengthen The Langham’s tradition of engaging guests with the arts and fostering deeper connections with its cultural ambassadors.
The series is part of a broader strategy by The Langham to differentiate its luxury hospitality offerings through cultural programming. This approach aligns with recent developments in the group’s portfolio, including the upcoming opening of Langham Custom House Bangkok, which is set to debut in December. The group continues to expand its footprint in key Asian markets, while also investing in experiential initiatives that appeal to discerning travellers.
For travel professionals, the Luminaries in Residence series represents a new avenue for guest engagement and destination marketing. Hotels can leverage such cultural events to attract both leisure and business travellers, offering unique experiences that go beyond traditional accommodation. The series also provides opportunities for local partnerships with artists and cultural institutions, enhancing the hotel’s role as a community hub.
The Langham’s move reflects a broader industry trend of luxury hotels incorporating arts and culture into their guest experience. Similar initiatives have been seen at other properties, such as the wellness retreats at Ser Casasandra in Holbox, which focus on holistic well-being. By curating exclusive cultural content, hotels can create memorable stays that drive loyalty and positive word-of-mouth.
As the series expands, The Langham aims to position itself as a leader in cultural hospitality, offering guests a window into the creative process of renowned artists. The choice of Ayanga, a star in Chinese musical theatre, underscores the group’s commitment to celebrating local talent while appealing to an international audience.
For agents and tour operators, the Luminaries in Residence series offers a compelling reason to recommend Langham properties to clients seeking cultural immersion. The exhibitions and events can be packaged as part of bespoke itineraries, adding value to luxury travel experiences. With the series set to feature global names like Joshua Bell, the potential for cross-marketing and exclusive events is significant.
The Langham’s initiative also highlights the growing importance of cultural programming in the hospitality sector, as hotels compete to offer unique experiences that cannot be replicated online. By investing in such series, The Langham is not only enhancing its brand but also contributing to the cultural vibrancy of the destinations it serves.
