Malaysia Airlines has introduced a new engagement initiative for the sporting community, combining fitness with travel rewards. The carrier's "Ride Together, Fly Together" challenge gives cycling enthusiasts the opportunity to win an all-expenses-paid trip to Melbourne, where they will join Malaysian track cycling champion Dato' Azizulhasni Awang for an exclusive riding experience.
Awang, who recently secured a gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, will lead a select group of winners through a curated programme at the Joe Ciavola Velodrome. The experience includes a behind-the-scenes look at elite track cycling, a training observation session, and a 60.7-kilometre coastal ride alongside the champion.
How the challenge works
Open until 28 August 2026, the challenge requires participants to complete a 6.5-kilometre ride on Strava, the global fitness platform, and submit their details on the MHsports challenge campaign page. Five winners will be chosen to join the Melbourne cycling programme, which also includes a velodrome tour and the coastal ride with Awang.
Bryan Foong, CEO of Airline Business at Malaysia Aviation Group, explained the rationale behind the initiative: "MHsports was created to make travel more accessible and convenient for athletes, sporting teams, and active communities. Through this initiative, we hope to inspire more people to stay active whilst demonstrating how Malaysia Airlines can support their sporting journeys beyond the destination."
The MHsports platform, which underpins the challenge, offers flexible travel options, additional baggage allowance, and other benefits tailored for sporting communities. Participants in the challenge will also receive promotional codes for discounts on future Malaysia Airlines flights.
In addition to the cycling experience, Malaysia Airlines is promoting fares from London Heathrow to Australia, available for booking until 20 August 2026. This aligns with the airline's broader strategy to strengthen its presence in the Australian market, a key route for both leisure and sports travel.
The initiative reflects a growing trend among airlines to engage niche communities through experiential marketing. By partnering with a high-profile athlete like Awang, Malaysia Airlines aims to build brand loyalty among active travellers. The challenge also leverages the popularity of platforms like Strava to reach a digitally savvy audience.
For travel professionals, this campaign underscores the importance of tailoring offerings to specific traveller segments. Sports tourism is a rapidly expanding niche, and airlines that can provide value-added services—such as flexible booking, extra baggage, and unique experiences—stand to gain a competitive edge. Malaysia Airlines' approach could serve as a model for other carriers looking to differentiate themselves in a crowded market.
As the travel industry continues to recover and evolve, initiatives like this highlight the intersection of fitness, technology, and travel. With the Commonwealth Games and other major sporting events on the horizon, expect more airlines to explore similar partnerships to capture the attention of sports enthusiasts.
