Marella Cruises has announced that Marella Discovery 2 will transition to a permanently adults-only ship beginning in winter 2027. The move aligns with a broader industry shift toward adult-focused cruising, as lines such as Oceania Cruises have also confirmed plans to adopt 18-plus policies across their fleets.

New Onboard Venues Replace Family Zones

Rather than simply removing children’s facilities, Marella is repurposing the ship’s former family areas into four distinct adult-oriented spaces. A moody speakeasy bar will offer craft cocktails in an intimate setting, while a dedicated karaoke room and an escape room cater to guests seeking interactive evening entertainment. An adults-only arts-and-crafts studio will provide a creative outlet during sea days.

“We’re not just taking away kids’ clubs; we’re thoughtfully redesigning those spaces to give our adult guests exactly what they’ve been asking for,” said a Marella Cruises spokesperson. “The speakeasy and escape room are direct responses to feedback from our core demographic.”

Canary Islands Homeport and Atlantic Fusion Itinerary

The adults-only conversion coincides with a deployment shift to the Canary Islands. From November 2027 through March 2028, Marella Discovery 2 will homeport in Tenerife and Gran Canaria, before repositioning to Málaga for March and April 2028. This winter-sun positioning targets UK and European travellers seeking warm-weather itineraries without long-haul flights.

The headline itinerary is a new seven-night “Atlantic Fusion” cruise sailing round-trip from Las Palmas. The route combines classic Canary Island calls—Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, and La Palma—with a port stop at Agadir in Morocco, adding North African cultural and culinary elements to the voyage.

Broader Industry Trend Toward Adults-Only Cruising

Marella’s decision reflects a growing market segment. Oceania Cruises confirmed in late 2025 that it will transition its entire fleet to an 18-plus model for all new bookings from 7 January 2026, citing guest feedback and a desire for a consistently tranquil onboard environment. Other lines, including Virgin Voyages and certain P&O Cruises ships, have also carved out adult-only niches.

For travel agents and tour operators, the shift creates clearer product differentiation. “Clients now have a spectrum: family-friendly ships with water parks and kids’ clubs, and adult-focused vessels where the entire experience is curated for grown-ups,” said a cruise industry analyst. “Marella Discovery 2’s makeover leans hard into the latter, offering playful sophistication without the bedtime routine.”

The move also opens opportunities for luxury-themed sailings and partnerships with entertainment providers, as the ship’s new venues can host themed events and late-night programming.

Implications for Travel Professionals

For UK-based agents and tour operators, the Canary Islands homeport simplifies logistics for winter-sun packages. Marella’s fly-cruise model from regional UK airports to Tenerife and Gran Canaria remains intact, with the added appeal of an adults-only environment. The Atlantic Fusion itinerary also provides a fresh option for repeat Canaries cruisers seeking variety.

Marella Discovery 2’s transformation is more than a rebrand; it is a strategic repositioning of onboard space to meet a clear market desire for adult-focused respite and playful sophistication. For luxury travellers seeking relaxed days, lively evenings, and itineraries that prioritise culture and comfort, this adults-only ship offers an appealing new option—one where privacy, personality, and a night out are all part of the voyage.
