Hilton has confirmed the signing of its first Motto by Hilton property in Japan, with the brand set to debut in Kyoto in 2029. The new-build hotel, named Motto by Hilton Kyoto Shijo Karasuma, will be developed in partnership with Heiwa Real Estate Co. and will feature 108 guest rooms, an all-day dining venue, and a lounge with an open terrace. Hilton will manage the property, which is strategically positioned near Shijo and Karasuma stations, offering convenient access to Kyoto's cultural landmarks such as Nishiki Market, Gion, and the Higashiyama district.

Expanding Hilton's lifestyle footprint in Kyoto

The introduction of Motto by Hilton marks a significant step in Hilton's lifestyle portfolio expansion across Japan. Since the opening of ROKU KYOTO, LXR Hotels & Resorts in 2021, Hilton has launched five properties in Kyoto over the past five years. With the upcoming Curio Collection by Hilton hotel and now the Motto by Hilton, Hilton's total number of hotels in the city will reach seven, underscoring Kyoto's importance as a key growth market for the group.

Hirohisa Fujimoto, Hilton's vice president of Development for Japan and Micronesia, commented: “The debut of Motto in Kyoto reflects our continued commitment to one of Hilton's key growth markets.” He added that the brand is designed to offer a flexible stay experience that appeals to a wide range of travellers, from families to solo explorers.

Kiyoyuki Tsuchimoto, CEO of Heiwa Real Estate Co., expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting that the project aligns with the company's long-term vision, WAY2040, which aims to expand its hotel business. “We are delighted to partner with Hilton to bring the Motto brand to Kyoto, a city that attracts discerning travellers from around the world,” Tsuchimoto said.

The Motto by Hilton Kyoto Shijo Karasuma will participate in the Hilton Honors loyalty programme, offering members exclusive benefits and earning opportunities. This integration is expected to drive direct bookings and enhance guest loyalty, a priority for Hilton as it continues to grow its footprint in Japan.

Kyoto remains one of Japan's most sought-after destinations, drawing millions of visitors annually. The city's appeal spans leisure and business travel, with a growing demand for lifestyle-oriented accommodations that offer local experiences. Motto by Hilton, known for its flexible and social design, is well-positioned to cater to this trend.

Hilton's expansion in Kyoto is part of a broader strategy to strengthen its presence in Japan's secondary cities, following the success of its urban properties in Tokyo and Osaka. The group has also been active in other parts of Asia, with recent developments such as the Hilton Garden Inn Batam City Centre slated for 2028, and a continued focus on lifestyle brands across the region.

Industry observers note that the entry of Motto by Hilton into Japan reflects a wider trend of international hotel groups introducing their lifestyle brands to capture the growing segment of travellers seeking authentic, design-led stays. The brand's flexible room configurations and communal spaces are designed to appeal to both leisure and business guests, making it a versatile addition to Hilton's portfolio.

With the signing of this project, Hilton now has a pipeline of over 20 hotels in Japan, including properties under the Curio Collection, Tapestry Collection, and other lifestyle brands. The company's commitment to the Japanese market is further evidenced by its recognition as Asia's best workplace for a decade, a testament to its operational excellence and employee engagement.

The Motto by Hilton Kyoto Shijo Karasuma is expected to break ground in the coming years, with completion targeted for 2029. As Kyoto continues to evolve as a global tourism hub, the addition of this new lifestyle hotel will provide travellers with more choices and contribute to the city's vibrant hospitality landscape.
