Marriott International's Moxy brand has expanded its Japan footprint with the opening of Moxy Niseko Village, a 310-room property positioned directly beside the Niseko Village Gondola in Hokkaido. The hotel offers true ski-in/ski-out access, tapping into the growing demand for alpine stays that combine convenience with social experiences.
Cristiano Rinaldi, Chief Lodging Product & Services Officer for Asia Pacific excluding China at Marriott International, framed the launch as a response to shifting traveler expectations. “Moxy Niseko Village reflects the evolution of travel today, where guests are seeking authentic places, flexible experiences and meaningful opportunities to connect,” he said.
Design and amenities tailored to the slopes
The property blends Moxy's signature playful aesthetic with the natural surroundings of Hokkaido. Public spaces are designed to encourage interaction, anchored by the Moxy Bar, which serves as a lively meeting point. Additional dining options include Moxy Bar & Cafe and Moxy Grab & Go, catering to everything from quick breakfasts to après-ski drinks.
Guests can also take advantage of a 24/7 fitness center and an outdoor foot onsen, a nod to Japanese bathing culture that offers a relaxing end to a day on the mountain. The hotel sits within the broader Niseko Village resort, which supports year-round activities including hiking and golf during the warmer months.
The opening aligns with the scheduled launch of a new eight-person gondola in December 2026, which will improve access to the area's extensive ski terrain. That infrastructure investment underscores Niseko's continued rise as a premier international winter destination, drawing visitors from across Asia and beyond.
Panch Ratnavale, Captain of Moxy Niseko Village, expressed enthusiasm about introducing the brand to one of the world's most celebrated alpine regions. “We are thrilled to welcome guests to Moxy Niseko Village and introduce the brand’s playful, social spirit to one of the world’s most celebrated alpine destinations,” he said.
Moxy Niseko Village marks the fifth Moxy property in Japan, following earlier openings in Tokyo and other key cities. The brand's expansion reflects Marriott's broader strategy to grow its select-service portfolio in the Asia Pacific region, where ski tourism and lifestyle hospitality are converging.
For travel professionals, the property adds a new option in a market that has seen significant hotel development in recent years. Niseko's appeal extends beyond skiing, with a growing reputation for luxury and experiential travel, as evidenced by Park Hyatt-branded villas also debuting in the area.
The hotel's location within Niseko Village places it near a range of amenities and activities, making it suitable for both leisure and incentive groups. Its social spaces and flexible dining options align with the preferences of younger travelers and those seeking a more relaxed, community-oriented stay.
Marriott's investment in Niseko comes as Japan continues to attract record numbers of international visitors, particularly during the winter season. The country's ski resorts are increasingly competing with established destinations in Europe and North America, offering a unique combination of powder snow, cultural experiences, and high-end accommodations.
With the new gondola on the horizon and a growing portfolio of branded hotels, Niseko is positioning itself as a year-round destination. For hoteliers and tour operators, the opening of Moxy Niseko Village represents another step in the maturation of Japan's alpine tourism sector.
