Northern Jet has taken delivery of a Gulfstream G550, marking the company's entry into the ultralong-range segment. The aircraft, which entered service in late 2025, is now the largest in the operator's fleet and significantly extends its mission capability for both domestic and international travel.

The G550, with a maximum range of approximately 6,500 nautical miles, can connect city pairs such as New York to Tokyo or London to Los Angeles without refueling. For Northern Jet clients, this means fewer stops and more direct routing to key business and leisure destinations across North America, Europe, and Asia.

Fleet Expansion and Capability

Chris Bull, CEO of Northern Jet, described the addition as a milestone. “The Gulfstream G550 marks an exciting new chapter for Northern Jet. As our first ultralong-range aircraft and the largest jet to join our fleet, it meaningfully expands what we can offer our clients,” he said.

The cabin accommodates up to 14 passengers in a stand-up configuration with multiple living areas. It is equipped with Starlink high-speed WiFi, ensuring reliable connectivity for business travelers and entertainment during long flights. A baggage compartment accessible in flight adds convenience for extended trips.

Northern Jet, with over 31 years in the private aviation sector, has been investing in its heavy and large-cabin fleet to meet growing demand for more space and range. The G550 joins a fleet that includes other Gulfstream models and Bombardier aircraft, but this is the first to offer true ultralong-range capability.

The move aligns with broader trends in business aviation, where operators are adding larger aircraft to serve high-net-worth individuals and corporate clients. Similar fleet expansions have been seen elsewhere, such as Saudi Arabia's THC expanding into fixed-wing business aviation with a Bombardier order.

For Northern Jet, the G550 opens new route possibilities. Direct connections from its base in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to destinations like London, Paris, or even Dubai become feasible without intermediate stops. This is particularly relevant for clients in the automotive, manufacturing, and pharmaceutical sectors that require rapid transatlantic travel.

The aircraft's performance also supports operations into high-altitude airports and challenging environments, such as Aspen or Telluride, where shorter runways and thinner air demand capable jets. The G550's advanced avionics and engine performance make it suitable for such missions.

Bull emphasized that the addition is part of a broader strategy. “We are committed to delivering personal service and operational excellence. The G550 strengthens that commitment by giving us ultralong-range capability for the first time,” he said.

Industry observers note that the ultralong-range segment remains competitive, with Gulfstream, Bombardier, and Dassault all offering models in this class. Northern Jet's choice of the G550 positions it against operators like NetJets and Flexjet, which also operate large-cabin fleets. The company's focus on personalized service and Midwest base may differentiate it in a crowded market.

Looking ahead, Northern Jet may consider further fleet additions. The G550's success could lead to orders for the newer Gulfstream G650 or G700, though Bull did not comment on future plans. For now, the company is focused on integrating the aircraft and marketing its capabilities to existing and prospective clients.

The broader business aviation market continues to see growth, driven by demand for time-efficient travel and the expansion of global business networks. As Boeing's 2026 market outlook projects a global fleet of over 50,000 aircraft by 2045, operators like Northern Jet are positioning themselves to capture a share of that growth.
