Oceania Cruises has reached a key construction milestone with the float-out of Oceania Sonata at Fincantieri's Marghera shipyard near Venice. The vessel is the first in the line's new Sonata Class, a six-ship series that will redefine the premium small-ship segment through greater space, upgraded suites and a renewed culinary focus.

At approximately 86,000 gross tonnes, Oceania Sonata is nearly 30% larger than its predecessor, Oceania Allura, yet carries only 90 additional accommodations. That deliberate ratio translates into expansive public areas and generously proportioned staterooms, reinforcing the brand's positioning as a leader in upper-premium cruising.

The ship will now undergo interior outfitting at the berth, with delivery scheduled ahead of its maiden season beginning in August 2027. Oceania Sonata will be followed by Oceania Arietta in 2029, with three further vessels planned for 2032, 2035 and 2037.

Design and dining

Oceania Sonata will maintain an adults-only ambience, a hallmark of the line, while introducing new venues and concepts. Dining options will total 13 restaurants, including two new culinary experiences: La Table par Maîtres Cuisiniers de France, a collaboration with the French master chefs' association, and Nikkei Kitchen, which fuses Japanese techniques with Peruvian ingredients.

Jason Montague, Chief Luxury Officer of Oceania Cruises, said: “The float out of Oceania Sonata is an incredibly exciting moment as we move one step closer to welcoming our first guests aboard next August.”

The ship's design prioritises light and space, with floor-to-ceiling windows in many suites and a layout that encourages social interaction without compromising privacy. The line has also expanded its onboard enrichment programme, which will be further developed ahead of the 2027 debut, as part of a broader expansion of speakers and workshops.

Inaugural itineraries

Oceania Sonata's inaugural season runs from August 2027 to April 2028, calling at more than 90 destinations across Europe, the Caribbean and the Americas. Highlights include a 14-day Mediterranean voyage and a 16-day Panama Canal itinerary, offering agents and travellers a mix of classic and expedition-style routes.

The Sonata Class represents a significant investment by Oceania's parent company, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, as it seeks to capture demand from affluent travellers seeking smaller, more intimate ships with high-end amenities. The line's expansion mirrors broader industry trends, with competitors like Mitsui Ocean Cruises adding new tonnage in the premium segment.

For travel advisors, the new ship offers a fresh selling point: a vessel that combines the space and comfort of a larger ship with the personalised service of a boutique line. With its extended build programme through 2037, Oceania is signalling long-term confidence in the small-ship luxury market.

The float-out ceremony at Marghera was attended by shipyard officials and Oceania executives, marking the transition from dry dock to fitting-out phase. Fincantieri, which has built all of Oceania's vessels, continues to be a key partner in the line's fleet renewal.

As the cruise industry rebounds from the pandemic, newbuilds like Oceania Sonata are expected to drive demand, particularly among experienced cruisers seeking novel experiences. The ship's debut will be closely watched by competitors and agents alike, as it sets a new benchmark for the upper-premium category.
