Mitsui Ocean Cruises, Japan's premium cruise operator, is set to expand its fleet with the debut of its second five-star vessel, the Mitsui Ocean Sakura, on 19 September 2026. The ship, previously operated as the Seabourn Sojourn, will join the line's existing Mitsui Ocean Fuji to offer immersive journeys around Japan.

Both vessels accommodate 458 guests and feature fine dining venues, lounges, and wellness facilities. Notably, 90% of staterooms include private balconies, ensuring ocean views for most passengers. The cruise experience is built around the Japanese philosophies of funatabi (sea travel) and omotenashi (meticulous hospitality), aiming to immerse guests in the country's culture and heritage.

To mark the launch, Cruise Traveller, the exclusive representative for Mitsui in Australia, has unveiled special fly-free packages for 2027 voyages. These offers include complimentary return flights to Tokyo from major Australian cities, with itineraries ranging from seven to twelve nights. Prices start at A$8,799 per person.

Joe O’Sullivan, Managing Director of Cruise Traveller, commented: “Nobody knows Japan like Mitsui Ocean Cruises, offering a bespoke way of discovering the country's wonders.”

Silver Week highlight

A standout option is a nine-night sailing aboard the Mitsui Ocean Sakura departing 17 September 2027, timed to coincide with Japan's 'Silver Week' holiday period. This itinerary explores Honshu and five lesser-visited ports, providing a deeper look at Japan's coastal destinations. Priced from A$11,299 per person, the package includes shore excursions, selected beverages, and Wi-Fi.

Bookings made by 30 November 2026 will receive free return flights. The offer extends to four additional sailings aboard the Mitsui Ocean Fuji.

The expansion reflects a broader trend in the luxury cruise segment, where operators are increasingly tailoring experiences to specific cultural markets. Mitsui's focus on Japanese hospitality positions it uniquely among competitors, as noted in recent coverage of wellness and sustainability trends in Asia's luxury property market.

For travel agents and tour operators, the new ship and promotional packages present an opportunity to tap into growing demand for Japan-focused cruises. The fly-free incentive, in particular, is designed to reduce barriers for Australian travellers, a key source market for the region.

Mitsui Ocean Cruises continues to differentiate itself by offering an authentic Japanese experience at sea, a strategy that has resonated with luxury travellers seeking cultural immersion. As the line prepares for the Sakura's debut, industry watchers will be keen to see how it performs against established players in the Asia-Pacific cruise market.
