Berlin-based multimodal travel booking platform Omio has secured a $10 million strategic investment from Granite-Integral, a joint venture between Granite Asia and Japan's Integral Corporation, to accelerate its expansion across Japan and Southeast Asia. The funding underscores the growing importance of integrated transport booking platforms as Asia-Pacific solidifies its position as the world's fastest-growing tourism region.

Omio plans to use the capital to deepen its transport network in Japan and Southeast Asia, strengthen partnerships with regional operators, enhance customer experience, and expand its workforce—including its AI-focused technology hub in Singapore. The company launched in Japan earlier this year and has already seen strong demand from international visitors booking journeys along the iconic Golden Route linking Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, as well as trips to lesser-known mountain destinations, sacred pilgrimage routes, and coastal communities.

Multimodal Travel Gains Mainstream Traction

Industry forecasts indicate that nearly half of travelers now plan itineraries involving multiple modes of transport, making integrated booking platforms increasingly critical. Omio's platform allows users to search, compare, and book trains, buses, ferries, and flights in a single transaction. In Japan, the company has partnered with Japan Railways and Willer Express to offer seamless connections across the country's extensive rail and coach networks.

“Japan is one of the most exciting travel markets in the world today. Millions of travelers visit every year, but planning journeys across different operators and transport modes can still be complex, particularly beyond the major cities,” said Naren Shaam, Founder and CEO of Omio. “With Granite-Integral's unparalleled regional expertise, we intend to accelerate a new era of connected travel in Japan, expand our presence across Southeast Asia, and continue building a more connected future for travel across Asia.”

The investment also highlights the growing role of transport accessibility in destination choice. As travelers venture beyond traditional hotspots in search of authentic experiences, technology platforms that integrate rail, coach, ferry, and air travel are expected to shape how visitors move across the region. This trend aligns with broader industry developments, such as Thailand deepening tourism ties with Western China via air route expansion and digital partnerships and Radisson Hotel Group accelerating its Southeast Asia Pacific expansion.

CK Choun, Co-Head of Granite-Integral, commented: “Japan and Southeast Asia represent some of the most important long-term opportunities in global travel, with growing demand for more connected journeys across the region.” The joint venture's investment reflects confidence in Asia's evolving travel landscape, where multimodal platforms are becoming essential infrastructure.

For Omio, this investment signals a broader push to position Asia at the heart of the next generation of connected travel. The company's AI hub in Singapore will focus on enhancing search and booking algorithms, personalization, and real-time data integration across multiple transport modes. This technology-driven approach aims to simplify complex itineraries, particularly for travelers exploring secondary cities and rural areas.

The move comes as Southeast Asia sees intensified competition in travel infrastructure, with Indonesia ramping up MICE infrastructure and other destinations investing in connectivity. Omio's expansion into Japan and Southeast Asia positions it to capture a share of the region's booming inbound tourism, which is projected to grow faster than any other region over the next five years.

By integrating rail, coach, ferry, and flight options, Omio aims to reduce friction for travelers navigating multiple transport operators—a challenge particularly acute in Japan, where regional rail lines and bus networks are operated by different companies. The platform's partnerships with Japan Railways and Willer Express already cover key routes, and further operator agreements are expected as the company scales.

The $10 million investment from Granite-Integral is a strategic bet on the long-term potential of Asia's travel market, where demand for seamless, multimodal journeys is rising. For travel professionals—from airline executives to hoteliers and tour operators—Omio's expansion signals a shift toward integrated transport solutions that could reshape how visitors plan and book trips across the region.
