Patina Hotels & Resorts has confirmed a creative collaboration with multidisciplinary artist Oscar Wang for its debut property in mainland China, Patina Tianjin, scheduled to open in late 2026. The hotel, housed within the historic Italian Style Area, will feature site-specific installations and a signature line of lifestyle products developed with Wang, whose family ties to the city run deep.
Wang, known for bridging Eastern and Western aesthetics, has previously partnered with luxury houses including Tiffany & Co., Fendi, and Louis Vuitton. For Patina Tianjin, he will translate the city's layered history into contemporary expressions, offering guests a curated lens on Tianjin's identity. His great-grandfather once worked at the nearby Telephone Bureau No. 4, a building that now forms part of the hotel complex.
“Stepping inside the Former Telephone Bureau No. 4 was a deeply personal and evocative experience,” Wang said. “I am honoured to bring this personal connection to life through contemporary art pieces at Patina Tianjin.”
The partnership underscores Patina's ambition to operate not merely as a hotel but as a cultural platform. Roland Fasel, President of Capella Hotel Group, which manages the Patina brand, commented: “Oscar Wang’s personal connection with the city brings real depth to our partnership and our first Patina in China.”
Heritage architecture meets modern luxury
Patina Tianjin will occupy 18,000 square metres across 17 heritage buildings in the Italian Style Area, a district known for its early 20th-century European architecture. The adaptive reuse project aims to deliver a transformative luxury experience, integrating art, music, and design into the guest journey.
The hotel's opening aligns with broader trends in China's hospitality sector, where heritage conversions and cultural storytelling are gaining traction. As China's budget hotels become a gateway for 150 million foreign visitors, upscale properties like Patina Tianjin are positioning themselves to capture high-end international and domestic travellers seeking authentic local experiences.
Patina's entry into China comes at a time when luxury hotel groups are expanding their footprint in secondary cities. Tianjin, a major port city near Beijing, has seen growing interest from hotel developers, though it remains less saturated than the capital. The property will compete with established names such as The Ritz-Carlton, Tianjin, and the St. Regis Tianjin, but its heritage setting and artistic focus differentiate it.
Wang's involvement is expected to extend beyond the physical artworks. The co-created lifestyle merchandise, available in the hotel's retail spaces, will offer guests a tangible takeaway that reflects the property's narrative. This approach mirrors strategies used by other luxury hotels, such as Marriott's Liquid City cocktail series, which tours Greater China luxury hotels to engage local culture.
Patina Tianjin is part of Capella Hotel Group's broader expansion. The group, which also operates the Capella brand, has been growing its portfolio across Asia and the Middle East. The Tianjin property marks the first Patina in China, with more projects reportedly in the pipeline.
For travel professionals, the opening signals a continued shift toward experiential luxury, where design and cultural immersion are as important as amenities. As China's top cities skip Olympic bids, reshaping host city economics, secondary destinations like Tianjin are increasingly investing in tourism infrastructure to attract discerning visitors.
Patina Tianjin is expected to become a landmark for the city, drawing art enthusiasts and luxury travellers alike. The collaboration with Oscar Wang is a key element of that strategy, promising a unique blend of personal history and contemporary creativity.
