Pure Michigan, the state's long-running tourism brand, is marking its 20th anniversary with a fresh autumn campaign designed to draw visitors to the state's 19 million acres of forestland and seasonal attractions. The effort, part of the ongoing 'For Every Season of You' platform, targets key regional feeder markets and leans into the state's reputation for vivid fall color and agritourism.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer framed the season as a signature draw, citing the changing leaves, working cider mills, and family traditions like corn mazes and pumpkin carving. 'Autumn in Michigan is truly unmatched,' she said, inviting travelers to experience the season's appeal firsthand.
Kelly Wolgamott, vice president of Pure Michigan, said the campaign is built around reconnecting with friends and family against the state's natural backdrop. 'Whether you're seeking vibrant autumn colors or the season's fresh agricultural bounty, Pure Michigan is ready to welcome you,' Wolgamott added.
Campaign creative and media plan
The centerpiece is a new spot called 'In Vivid Colour,' which blends nostalgia with Michigan's iconic autumn palette. The commercial will run on streaming platforms including Amazon Prime and Netflix, alongside online and social media placements. The campaign also includes a partnership with National Geographic, extending the brand's reach to audiences interested in nature and travel.
Media buys are concentrated in traditional feeder markets for Michigan tourism, including Chicago, Toronto, and other Midwest and Northeast metros. The goal, according to the state's tourism arm, is to convert seasonal inspiration into bookings for hotels, resorts, and local attractions.
To help travelers plan around peak foliage, Pure Michigan has refreshed its interactive Autumn Colour Map and will issue the Pure Michigan Autumn Colour Report with weekly updates on color progression across the state.
Local partnership and craft beer tie-in
In a nod to Michigan's craft beverage scene, Pure Michigan has teamed with Shorts Brewing Company to produce the Pure Michigan Autumn IPA, a seasonal ale made with locally sourced ingredients. The beer will be available at Shorts' pub and select retailers, giving the campaign a tangible product that extends the brand's reach beyond traditional tourism marketing.
The anniversary campaign follows a broader trend of destination marketing organizations using partnerships and limited-edition products to generate buzz. Similar efforts have been seen in other regions, such as Sussex's autumn lineup and Aman's seasonal programming.
For travel professionals, the campaign underscores the importance of seasonal storytelling and multi-channel distribution. Michigan's approach—combining broadcast, streaming, and a local product tie-in—offers a template for destinations looking to stand out in a crowded autumn market.
Pure Michigan's 20-year milestone also highlights the longevity of destination branding. As other states and countries roll out new campaigns, such as Croatia's cinematic push, Michigan is betting that its established identity and seasonal focus will keep it top of mind.
The campaign is set to run through the fall, with the foliage map and color report updated weekly. Travel advisors and tour operators can use these tools to guide clients on timing and routing, particularly for leaf-peeping itineraries that combine urban stops like Detroit and Grand Rapids with rural forest areas.
