RIU Hotels & Resorts has made its long-awaited entry into Barcelona with the acquisition of the historic Hotel Princesa Sofía, a landmark property near Camp Nou. The deal, orchestrated by RIU Blasson Property Investments and BNP Paribas Asset Management Alts, is being hailed as one of Spain's most significant hotel transactions this year.
The hotel, located on Avinguda Joan XXIII, will be managed by RIU from 1 April 2027, becoming the 14th property in its RIU Plaza urban collection, which already includes hotels in London, New York, and Chicago. With 465 rooms across 19 floors, the Princesa Sofía also boasts one of Barcelona's largest meeting and event venues, a key asset for the MICE segment.
A decade-long search ends
Luis Riu, CEO of RIU Hotels, expressed his enthusiasm: "With this hotel, we are achieving a historic milestone, having spent more than a decade searching for the right opportunity to invest in Barcelona." The acquisition underscores RIU's strategic focus on expanding its urban footprint in major global cities.
The transaction was brokered by aCapital for the buyers and Eastdil and Colliers for the sellers. RIU, founded in Mallorca in 1953, remains a family-owned chain specializing in holiday resorts and city hotels. The company operates 101 hotels across 22 countries and welcomed 6.8 million guests in 2025.
This move positions RIU to compete directly in Barcelona's competitive upscale hotel market, which has seen renewed interest from international operators. The property's proximity to Camp Nou and CaixaBank's headquarters makes it attractive for both leisure and corporate travelers.
RIU's expansion into Barcelona aligns with broader trends in the hospitality sector, where established players are seeking strategic acquisitions to strengthen their urban portfolios. The company's RIU Plaza line has been a growth driver, and this addition is expected to enhance its presence in Southern Europe.
Industry analysts note that the deal reflects confidence in Barcelona's tourism recovery and its appeal as a MICE destination. The hotel's extensive event facilities are likely to be a major draw for conference organizers.
RIU's entry into Barcelona is a significant milestone for the family-owned group, which has traditionally focused on resort destinations. The company's ability to secure a prime urban asset demonstrates its ambition to diversify and grow in key markets.
As RIU prepares to take over management in 2027, the hotel will undergo a transition period to align with RIU Plaza standards. The company has not disclosed the financial terms of the deal, but it is expected to be a substantial investment.
For travel professionals, this acquisition signals RIU's commitment to urban expansion and its confidence in Barcelona's long-term prospects. The hotel's addition to the RIU Plaza portfolio will offer new options for corporate and leisure clients alike.
