Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has brought its Southwest End-Around Taxiway into operation ahead of the planned timeline, marking the third installation of this type at the Texas hub. The taxiway is a key component of the airport's $12 billion DFW Forward capital programme, which aims to modernise infrastructure and accommodate rising passenger volumes.

End-around taxiways allow arriving aircraft to bypass active runways entirely, eliminating the need to cross them. This design reduces runway incursions and conflicts, improves the flow of aircraft movements, and trims taxi times by an average of four minutes per flight. For airlines operating at DFW, the time savings translate directly into lower fuel burn, reduced operating costs, and shorter waits for passengers on the tarmac.

The new Southwest End-Around Taxiway incorporates more than 600 LED light fixtures, 145,000 linear feet of electrical cable, and nearly 97,000 square yards of concrete pavement. These upgrades are intended to enhance safety and operational efficiency on the airfield, supporting DFW's position as one of the busiest airports in the world.

FAA support and a decade of progress

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has provided $180 million in grants to support DFW's end-around taxiway programme. The airport completed its first end-around taxiway in 2008, followed by the Northeast End-Around Taxiway in May 2022. With the Southwest taxiway now live, DFW is the only airport in the United States with end-around taxiways at both ends of a single runway.

“This is a significant milestone for DFW and for the airlines that operate here,” said a DFW spokesperson. “The end-around taxiway not only improves safety but also delivers tangible efficiency gains that benefit our partners and passengers alike.”

The completion of the Southwest End-Around Taxiway is part of the broader DFW Forward initiative, a $12 billion investment programme designed to upgrade airport facilities, expand capacity, and improve the passenger experience. DFW expects to handle 100 million passengers annually by 2030, and the new taxiway is a critical piece of infrastructure to support that growth.

For travel professionals, the operational improvements at DFW are noteworthy. Reduced taxi times and fewer runway crossings can help airlines improve on-time performance and reduce fuel costs, which is increasingly important in a high-cost environment. The airport's investment in end-around taxiways also positions it as a leader in airfield innovation, a model that other major hubs may look to emulate.

DFW's move comes as airports worldwide focus on efficiency and sustainability. Similar projects are underway at other large hubs, but DFW's early completion of its third end-around taxiway gives it a competitive edge. The airport's commitment to modernisation is part of a broader trend in the aviation industry, where infrastructure upgrades are seen as essential to meeting future demand.

As DFW continues to expand, the new taxiway will play a key role in maintaining smooth operations, especially during peak travel periods. The airport's ability to handle more aircraft movements without compromising safety is a testament to its forward-thinking approach.

For airlines and passengers, the benefits are clear: shorter taxi times, fewer delays, and a more efficient travel experience. The completion of the Southwest End-Around Taxiway is a win for DFW, its airline partners, and the millions of travelers who pass through the airport each year.
