Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has introduced a new brand platform and tagline, "Scandinavian as Standard," timed to its 80th anniversary. The initiative, developed with Ogilvy, will roll out across media channels starting 28 September, aiming to position the carrier as a cultural and commercial connector between the Nordics and the rest of the world.
The platform is rooted in the belief that Scandinavian values—curiosity, trust, collaboration, and innovation—offer lessons for global audiences. Paul Verhagen, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at SAS, said: "Scandinavia is a wonderful place to live, visit and do business. But I also believe there is something the world can learn from this region. Values such as curiosity, trust and collaboration have helped shape Scandinavia and the way it connects with the world."
Johanna Gustafsson, Head of Brand at SAS, explained the campaign's insight: "The campaign is built around a simple observation: many of the things people admire about Scandinavia are things Scandinavians rarely think twice about. What others may see as exceptional is often considered standard here."
Strategic positioning for a changing airline
The brand refresh comes at a pivotal time for SAS. The carrier, which has operated since 1946, recently completed its restructuring and joined the SkyTeam alliance in September 2024, strengthening its network ties with partners such as Delta Air Lines, Air France-KLM, and others. The new platform is designed to reinforce SAS's identity as a premium Nordic airline while appealing to international travelers and business partners.
SAS operates major hubs in Copenhagen, Oslo, and Stockholm, serving more than 25 million passengers annually across 135 destinations worldwide. The airline has also committed to reducing CO₂ emissions in line with international climate frameworks, a key part of its sustainability strategy.
The campaign will be supported by a mix of digital, social, and out-of-home advertising, with a focus on key markets in Europe, Asia, and North America. SAS aims to leverage its Scandinavian heritage to differentiate itself in a competitive transatlantic and intra-European market.
Industry observers note that the move aligns with broader trends among legacy carriers to emphasize brand values and regional identity. For travel professionals, the campaign signals SAS's intent to strengthen its premium positioning and deepen engagement with corporate clients and leisure travelers alike.
As airlines face rising fuel costs and capacity constraints, brand differentiation becomes increasingly important. SAS's focus on Scandinavian values could resonate with travelers seeking authenticity and reliability. The carrier's recent alliance shift to SkyTeam also opens new opportunities for code-sharing and loyalty integration, which the brand platform may help amplify.
For agents and tour operators, the campaign offers a fresh angle to market Scandinavia as a destination and SAS as a preferred carrier. The airline's hubs in Copenhagen, Oslo, and Stockholm provide convenient connections to the region's key cities and beyond.
With the tagline "Scandinavian as Standard," SAS is betting that its heritage is a competitive advantage. Whether that resonates with global audiences remains to be seen, but the airline is clearly committed to telling its story on its own terms.
