Sean Martin, the newly elected Chair of the Council of Australian Tour Operators (CATO) Committee, has been appointed to the Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA) Board. The announcement, made on 23 July 2026, is part of ATIA's ongoing effort to deepen sector-specific expertise within its leadership, particularly for the tour operator and wholesaler segment.

Martin's appointment follows his election as Chair during the inaugural meeting of the reconstituted CATO Committee. This governance move comes after CATO's formal integration into ATIA on 1 July 2026. He joins Vice Chair Toni Ambler and Director Brett Mitchell on the Board, bringing extensive experience from the touring sector.

Strengthening Sector Representation

ATIA's governance model is designed to ensure that every segment of Australia's travel industry has a dedicated voice. Alongside the CATO Committee, the Association of Travel Management Companies (ATMC) and the Independent Travel Advisors Association (ITAA) continue to provide strategic input for their respective sectors. This structure aims to support advocacy and collaboration across aviation, hospitality, cruise, and travel technology.

Martin expressed his enthusiasm for the role: "It is an honour to join the ATIA Board and represent the CATO community as we begin this new chapter together." He emphasised the critical role of Australia's tour operators and wholesalers in the visitor economy and his commitment to bringing their perspectives to the Board.

ATIA Chair Christian Hunter welcomed the appointment, stating: "Sean's appointment further strengthens the breadth of expertise around the ATIA Board table." He highlighted that the governance model is designed to ensure every industry sector has a strong voice, which is particularly important as the travel industry continues to recover and evolve.

The CATO Committee will continue to provide strategic leadership for the touring division, working closely with the ATIA Board to advance advocacy and foster industry collaboration. This includes addressing key issues such as sustainable tourism, technology adoption, and distribution strategies.

For travel professionals, this appointment signals ATIA's commitment to representing the interests of tour operators and wholesalers, who play a vital role in connecting international visitors with Australian experiences. The integration of CATO into ATIA is expected to streamline industry representation and amplify the voice of the touring sector in policy discussions.

Related developments in the travel industry include Turkish Airlines Joins SAF Fund to Scale Sustainable Fuel Production and Iglu Team Joins Flight Centre Global Gathering in Bangkok, both reflecting the industry's focus on sustainability and collaboration.

As the travel industry navigates challenges such as rising operational costs and shifting consumer preferences, strong sector representation becomes increasingly important. Martin's appointment ensures that the tour operator and wholesaler perspective remains central to ATIA's strategic direction.
