Solomon Airlines and Philippine Airlines have formalized an interline agreement that significantly improves connectivity between the Solomon Islands and Southeast Asia. The deal allows passengers to book seamless itineraries from Honiara (HIR) to Manila (MNL) via Port Moresby (POM) and Brisbane (BNE), reducing travel friction across the region.
Technical Integration Streamlines Passenger Experience
The partnership introduces Interline Through Check-In (IATCI) technical integration, enabling travelers to check baggage through to their final destination on a single ticket. This eliminates the need for baggage reclaim or re-check-in at transit points, a common pain point for multi-sector journeys. Matthew Findlay, CEO of Solomon Airlines, stated: “By enabling IATCI technical integration, we are removing the friction from international travel and creating new pathways to and from the Pacific Islands.”
Cail Sanciangco, Assistant Vice President of Philippine Airlines, emphasized the broader impact: “By strengthening links between the Philippines and the Solomon Islands, we are creating new opportunities for tourism, commerce, and cultural exchange.” The agreement is expected to facilitate business travel, leisure tourism, and labor mobility between the South Pacific and Asian markets.
Expanded Route Network Strengthens Port Moresby Hub
Solomon Airlines has also commenced its first weekly flight from Honiara to Port Moresby, complementing its existing four-times-weekly service to Brisbane. This strategic move positions Port Moresby as a key hub for travel to and from Asia, offering a faster alternative for those traveling between the Solomon Islands and Southeast Asia. The new routes are expected to boost connectivity for passengers connecting to Philippine Airlines’ extensive network across Asia, including destinations such as Tokyo, Seoul, and Singapore.
The partnership comes as Philippine Airlines continues to expand its international footprint, having recently boosted Japan frequencies and added Australia capacity for peak season. For Solomon Airlines, the deal provides access to a broader Asian network without requiring its own long-haul aircraft.
Implications for Travel Industry Stakeholders
For travel agents and tour operators, the interline agreement simplifies itinerary planning for clients traveling between the Pacific Islands and Asia. The single-ticket booking capability, available through both airlines’ reservation systems, reduces administrative complexity and improves reliability for multi-stop trips. Corporate travel managers will benefit from streamlined logistics for business travelers moving between Honiara and Manila, as well as onward connections to other Asian business hubs.
The partnership also aligns with broader trends in the aviation industry toward interline and codeshare agreements that enhance network reach without capital-intensive fleet expansion. Similar models have been adopted by carriers such as Malaysia Airlines, which recently launched integrated air-rail booking via the MHrail programme, demonstrating the value of multimodal and interline partnerships in improving customer experience.
Market Context and Future Outlook
The Solomon Islands tourism sector has been working to attract more visitors from Asia, and this air connectivity improvement is a critical enabler. Philippine Airlines’ strong presence in the Philippines and its growing network across Japan, China, and Australia make it a valuable partner for Solomon Airlines. The agreement also supports labor mobility, as many Solomon Islanders work in the Philippines and other Asian countries.
Tickets are now available through both Solomon Airlines and Philippine Airlines sales channels. The partnership is expected to stimulate demand for travel between the two countries and beyond, contributing to the recovery and growth of tourism in the Pacific region.
